And that's why there will be a fact-finding, and multiple critiques, and probably some NJP's or Article 15's, and then probably an Army-wide safety stand-down, and some new requirements with more paperwork and more steps, and more people sticking their fingers in the pie, to spread the blame around the next time it happens.

And Powerpoint. Lots, and lots of Powerpoint presentations.

I worked for an American multi-national company and they just LOVED Powerpoint presentations, oh, and Excel spreadsheets - if you could design a new excel form to be filled in so that another metric could be measured they were ecstatic RTFM

The video is interesting, but what makes it fun is the guy whopping and hollering. From the sounds they almost expected a car or two not to make it when they set up the camera.

Actually DOD gets just 16% of your tax dollars.

What did you expect them to do? I've seen a few vehicles burn in myself, as well as a 5-ton truck topple onto its side and a LAPESd Sheridan flip over and skid on its turret, and the only ones not laughing were the mechanics and the officer who knew he'd get stuck doing the investigation and survey.

I'd be laughing too. As long as you're not the one saddled by the mountain of work and no one gets hurt biggrin

At 1:18 the guy filming (I suppose it's him) says "called it!". The reactions on that video also don't give me the impression that they were at all surprised by what's happening. Rather they were - gleefully - waiting for exactly that to happen. smile

He had better hope that there is no way to connect him to the cause of the incident.

That was my point... the audio comments make it fun to watch, AND they sound like they expected it.

They sound like regular soldiers to me. When something totally screws up while just waiting around for hours what else are you suppose to do but laugh. Sometimes its not funny. Like people get hurt or a live TOW missile pops out its tube and goes 25 meters armed and your all standing there behind the launching vehicle going oh ****, that is a live armed tow missile 25 meters in front me. Get behind something dense. Then laugh and the jokes. Or a run away machine gun when your on line on a range. WTF, did insert name here go insane? Then folks start moving backward and away from the guy with the run away saw. Later laugh and lots of jokes.

If your a paratrooper and you watch things fall to the earth to their destruction should they get scared stupid? Maybe in the back of their minds they are thinking that vehicle could be them pancaking on the drop zone? Ya, better to just laugh the whole thing off. Makes a great story latter too.

I get that, but I'd say normally it'd take longer to identify and react (with laughing) to the realization that the chute didn't open. For the first vehicle it's basically instant amusement, as if they were already waiting for it. Not a "oh... look... hmm... aaaaa hahaaaa" moment.

Well it's instantly obvious that something has gone wrong if you're familiar with parachute drops. Plus, if they still do it the way they did when I was in equipment gets dropped first and then the troopers, so I don't know who's shooting the video (probably the DZSO team or perhaps the chute detail) but it shouldn't be anyone involved with rigging or loading the vehicles.

Watch the first 10-15 seconds of the video again. What exactly does the "commentator" say, and how does he say it? What undertone?

BTW, it's just an observation. I'm not judging. smile

He says "burn in," before the humvee actually comes off its pallet and starts falling. But you can see it oscillate 2 or 3 times before something breaks, and if we could see all the heavy drops I'd be willing to bet the ones that did burn in all acted similarly and different from the others. I wasn't involved with enough heavy drops to be able to pick it out right away, or to know what percentage go bad like these 3. It was only after you pointed it out and I watched it 3 or 4 times that I caught the oscillation.

Now I didn't think you were implying or flat-out saying anything, but if anyone thought they were intentionally improperly rigged or secured so that they'd fail they're wrong. If one of those vehicles had shifted on its pallet and come loose the change in the aircraft's CG could easily cause it to crash. The loadmaster isn't going to risk the crew's lives just to give soldiers on the ground something to laugh about.
