I never much liked his stuff past the 1999 album. But I did see him live about 10 years ago, and he put on a hell of a show. Dirty Mind was his best song IMHO. RIP dude !

I just owned the Purple Rain LP back in the day, but I liked it more for Apollonia than from the movie itself. Music was OK. Can't deny it was a big thing for a short time in my youth.
It was actually a way to produce music for himself. The record label owned his name and when they didn't negotiate the deal he wanted he simply continued to perform under a different name. Since he didn't want to use a pseudonym he invented that silly symbol and went by "The artist formerly known as Prince" so that when he got it back from the corporation he could use it freely again.
Yes.... this is one of the things he did for the music industry from the artist standpoint that many do not realize.. He pioneered the way music is sold today.. When he was in protest mode he did a tour with Larry Graham, Chaka Kahn, Joni Mitchell and he even pulled in Mavis Staples fopr a few shows.. The man did so much undercover blessing kind of stuff that no one knows about.. I was a fan since the moment I heard "I Wanna be Your Lover".
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
RIP to a talented artist who vibrated on a slightly different frequency from most of the rest of us. He did things his way, as Sinatra sang. "Genius" is often overused, but not in this case.

I don't want to jinx anyone into dying but there are 4-5 very big, very famous actors in their mid to late 80's which I am surprised they are still living.
While I can't remember the details, I seem to recall hearing about some good deeds done by Prince without seeking any publicity for them, just as Bearcat99 mentioned.
He definitely was a very talented guitar player, and a solid performer. He earned tons of respect in my book with how he handled the Super Bowl XLI halftime show in the pouring rain.
RIP, sir. 57 is much too young for that light to be extinguished.
If you live in MN. Its almost as bad as the Pope died, the news stations here have gone completely into live broadcasts from Paisley Park. There are hundreds of fans gathered outside the fences making memorials of purple flowers and and what not. There is nothing you can look at in the news that does not include Prince in it.
Yeah, I get it. He was a one man band learning to play it all. Guess the reason I never really cared for his style of music was we all have our own tastes in it. Never enjoyed any of his music. More power to him.
Every guy that was young in the 1990's owes Prince a debt of gratitude. His music had a way of making women feel all randy. If you had Prince in the CD player you were on the right track. And this is coming from a guy who was a dork back then.
Also applies to all of the 1980s (starting with "1999" (1982))! I'll be disappointed in The Molly Ringwalds if we don't hear the title track to "Purple Rain" next month. I had a new music agenda in 1984 and this album was part of that, Prince's music (as well as his movie, which I'll be watching Sunday evening) is good date night material.

As a 1980 Grad, never really took to his music, was still stuck in the 70`s with Nazareth and the Outlaws. Most everyone I graduated with was a Hard rocker. With 987 graduates from Coon Rapids. Total for the district 11, was over 3300 at the time. Highest ever recorded in the state.
More power to Prince, he was loved by many. To all those who loved his music, you have lost a true Icon to a music genius like no other. Peace be with you.
Going through my music collection I realized the following generalization about my favorite three decades of music:
70's music is about getting high. 80's music is about getting poon. 90's music is about getting angry.
The 70's is IMO by far the overall greatest decade of music (what will ever touch Dark Side of the Moon?), butt...
