Texas Flooding Heavy flooding has become nearly an annual rite of passage in the practically sea-level city, where experts have long warned of the potential for catastrophe. Samuel Brody, director of the Environmental Planning & Sustainability Research Unit at Texas A&M University, last year called Houston "the No. 1 city in America to be injured and die in a flood." If your city is known as the No. 1 city to be injured or die in a flood, why do people still try to cross flooded roads... Couldn't believe the idiots they showed on the news in small compact cars trying to cross roads with water up over the hood...The idiot in the picture above opens the passenger door and calls out to reporter "now what do I do" as his car is lifted off the road due to the water height. The reporter was only up to his waist so he could have walked to him, yet he dove in and swam. I'm just amazed at the stupidity you constantly see every time these issues like flash floods come up.

If your city is known as the No. 1 city to be injured or die in a flood, why do people still try to cross flooded roads... Simply put, many people are idiots. A couple of years ago I was stuck at work because it had been raining the entire day non-stop and by 5:00 pm my building was essentially surrounded by about 4 feet of water. Sure enough, I saw several people drive their cars head-on into the water and kill their engine after a few seconds.

This is what happens when the advancement of society inhibits natural selection, which is why, at minimum, stupidity should be painful.

If that water is moving it can sweep you off your feet even if it's "only" knee deep.

In defense of idiots, though, they're really necessary for the way our species moved and populated the planet.
It was pretty frigging stupid to chase a retreating Ice Age into Europe, after all, or to cross a thin strip of land from Asia to North America.
The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events. More dumb stuff at http://www.darts-page.comFrom Laser: "The forum is the place where combat (real time) flight simulator fans come to play turn based strategy combat."

I don't know if I'd equate explorers to the type of people that accidentally shoot themselves.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

One, in our relativity safe lives where everything is regulated by this or that, folks lack the basic sorts of lessons on the power of nature. So if water is sitting on a road folks just eye ball it and figure in can only be a few inches. Do not investigate and plow into 4 feet of water. Or lack just how powerful flowing water is. Like it only does things like make something insane like the Grand Canyon. If a rather small flowing river can make that thing, what do you think it will do to your car? Oh, but its only water.
9 years ago I was helping with traffic control after a flood. Large bits of freeway where under like 11 feet of water. Yet folks still did not ask themselves why on earth people where trying to not let cars get on the freeway. Had a good laugh at the moron that drove around the barriers and zipped off towards that 11 feet of water. Like where are you going to go you dumb ass?
But if all you ever did is live in the burbs and have no real world life experience and lack the brain cells to ask those important questions, well, enjoy the pickle you get yourself in.
Also always floored at people and wild fires. Its dry and there is a bunch of wind. Add fire and its just get the hell away. Not go sight see downwind. That fire can travel real fast.

I almost got fired (and did get a suspension) from a job over a fire/explosion threat. We were working a job and a house within 200 feet had this major gas leak going on. There were several fire trucks and utility trucks on the scene. The air absolutely reeked of gas. I had several years prior felt (yes, actually felt) a house explode from a big gas leak - from SEVEN MILES AWAY. I instantly told the boss and crew we need to leave, and I'm leaving with or without you all. Boss says "You're being paranoid, they're not evacuating". I replied "Because they don't want the PR if they can avoid it" - and I admit at the time, and to this guy, and to the young crew I probably DID sound a bit "tin foil hat" about the affair... And I did leave, immediately. The fact that no major explosion actually happened didn't help my case at all - hence the suspension, but at least I was given the chance to explain my actions to the superiors. I pulled up the news articles of the years prior incident to the superiors and gave that explanation - as in what I felt from SEVEN MILES away... So NONE of us (me, boss, crew, superiors) had ever actually been right up close to something like this, but something was learned by all... Something called RESPECT.
