There was another thread here regarding math that inspired me to post this simple quiz here: How much is: 5+5x5+5 Let's see who's the first to come up with the right answer

Falstar has it right. You don't multiply 5x5,so you just work left to right.

Hm, you're sure I'm wrong? Look at the example at this wiki-article Link Quote: 3 + 4 × 5 = 4 × 5 + 3 = 23 Jens

Nope. The winner is jens198! There's a rule called the Order of Operations in Mathematical Operations, which dictates that Multiplications takes precedence over other Mathematical Operations such as Addition. So you first need to do the Multiplications and then the Additions: First you do 5x5=25 (there's no need for parentheses around 5x5 since and again Multiplication takes precedence over Addition) Then you do: 5+25+5=35 So the result is 35 Congrats jens198!

What did I win? Is it big? And expensive?

I reckon Jens is correct. In maths the convention is to multiply first, so by default it's 5+(5x5)+5. In order for any other result to be correct it must have brackets to specify the order of operation.
i.e (5+5)x(5+5) = 100
to get 55 it would have to be ((5+5)x5)+5

What did I win? Is it big? And expensive? In this virtual world, the reward will logically be virtual and as such is can be virtually (pun intended) anything you want. My suggestion: how about the "virtual ego boost" as a reward

Now I feel so deserving of my maths 'O' level result. It was 'U' (unclassified). You can't get any lower. My maths teacher was right,I deserved to be in the side of the class he reserved for 'animals' as he liked to call all the no-hopers.

May be the order of operations but in the real world it doesn't work that way.
5 slices of bacon + 5 slices of bacon X 5 slices of bacon + 5 slices of bacon = 55 slices of bacon.
There is no mathematician in his right mind that would choose less bacon.

And another thing... you cannot subtract bacon nor can you divide bacon. Bacon can only be added and multiplied.

Yep. Plug that problem into your smartphone calculator app and see what happens.
