One always has to be wary of pierogi and ask what's in them - there are many types.

I love the ones filled with sausage, but sauerkraut? Oh, no, please no.

So I'm guessing that the perogy section
of the frozen foods being about the same
size as the frozen pizza, with about
eight brands and 20 different flavours, is
mainly a western Canada thing?

Homemade or bust. Those Mrs. Crapolini style frozen brands are dreadful. The potatoes are reconstituted and you can not only taste it but feel the awful texture.

It doesn't help that I'm Polish and quite used to the real deal. Grew up on those from my grandmother. Mmmmmm.

they are actually quite easy to make especially if you have a bread machine, just chuck in some flour, water, milk and eggs (or whatever your dough recipe is), let it mix for a few minutes while you boil the potatoes.

roll out the flour thin but not too thin, then put a small spoon full of mashed potato / cheese mix into each one and close them with a fork or with your fingers.

they're like very small calzones. i don't like huge pierogies, the small ones have better chewiness and overall flavor.

I used to live near the Damon Ave "L" stop in Wicker Park, Chicago. Right under the tracks (across for the famous "Doubledoor") was an awesome Polish diner. Unfortunately it is long gone. But their perogies were the best.

I've had them a couple of times but I find pierogi to be a bit on the bland side.

Heh, it's funny how that works sometimes. I was eating at a Panda Express last week (Chinese fast food) and I just thought it was a bit funny how there was a Chinese family there eating. I guess they must think its authentic enough! biggrin

The dining hall at Clarion University of Pennsylvania used to sometimes serve 'pierogi pizza.' It was a regular pizza crust and tomato sauce, and mashed potatoes instead of cheese. (It also served pierogis for Sunday brunch.)

Ha I was just there at that location on Saturday. Area is horrid now, heh. We had someoget get shot in the heard at that Damen L stop--during the daytime--and I don't think they ever found that guy. Anyway, the restaurant was part of the FlatTop restaurant area IIRC. Double Door is still there although they are in some kind of legal trouble.

My wife is born and raised in Poland, so I think she would say that pierogi came from Poland. Which, BTW, when you are talking about more than one of them, then it is called pierogi. Singular is pierog. If you say pierogis, then it's like saying "alienses" or "appleses."

Ugh, Panda Express. I'm not Chinese, but I'm Filipino so I know Asian food and I will not go there unless it's a last resort. Especially their horrible egg rolls. It would be like a Mexican family eating at Taco Bell. Besides, all the "Chinese" food you get at restaurants and take-out are all really just Americanized dishes made to cater to Western cultures. I worked in a Chinese restaurant and I never saw any of their Chinese employees eat anything from the menu. They always made their own food. When I was in Hong Kong and Taipei, none of the Chines restaurants there had food you'd fine in US Chinese restaurants.

Knight,

Yes, my wife makes them from scratch. Also there is a great Polish bistro near where I work that makes really really good pierogi. We actually end up getting them from there for Wigilia.

This was my impression as well. One of these days if I ever actually visit Taiwan or China I will be most curious to try out the real stuff. smile

Oh, it is quite exotic. When I was there I was thinking I'm glad I was raised on exotic Asian/Filipino food, otherwise I'd starve to death!
