And I've also never heard of a massive alligator trying to cross a road and causing a car to plough into it at high speed.

Really? Maybe not that size, but plenty of them get hit around here. That's more than a speed bump. LOL
They leave you alone if you leave them alone. Wouldn't live on the water and let the dog out without a solid fence though. It gets a little unnerving when they follow you around fishing, but it's just because they've learned that released fish are easy targets.
Before I knew how dangerous they were and could run at 35 mph, I stopped next to an area of water vacationing in the Everglades, and threw some Arby roast beef sandwiches to several of these huge ones just wading in knee high water. I stood maybe 10 feet from them on the shoreline having no idea how close I was to death.

well....I see your gator and raise you a 6' at the shoulder 1000lb moose in rutting season
or a farking big polar bear that I would not get close enough to , to guess it's size
Yep, both of those scare me way more than gators. Like T2 says though, a big one can get you if he wants you. We have a 12 footer that sometimes crawls out and suns itself right by my house. Very skittish, can't get close enough to get a pic of it. It must be around because my 2 regulars a 7 footer and a little 4 footer haven't been around for a couple of days.
Or it ate em!

I've met gators, cougars, rattlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouths, bear, and wild boar.
They're not trivial, but NONE ever scared me like earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes.
It's one thing to face an animal. It's not trivial.

Spend a year in Japan and you'll be surprised how much you get used to it (if you're there two weeks and don't feel one, you haven't been paying attention; but not matter how oblivious you are, you will encounter a fair number which will be impossible to miss). Take your cue from the locals - if it doesn't knock them off their feet or require dodging tumbling hardware, they barely acknowledge them.

Then you won't live here in Texas because we have big gators here too in our neighborhood with all the creeks and streams that run through here and then end up in big ponds and lakes where you can go fishing for bass and catfish and strippers and trouts.

You guys keep your strippers in ponds? To what end?

What are strippers doing in a Bible Belt state?

I lived in Osaka from August 1999 - August 2000. Not a single earthquake in that whole period! I guess I was just lucky.
There was an impressive typhoon, however.

Have had a close encounter with moose cross country skiing up along Gunflint trail is in northern MN. 3 of us were on an outer trail close to the Canadian border when we rounded a shorter pine tree just tall enough to hide the calves. We froze. Did not move or breath. They continued on there way without even looking at us while we were #%&*$# our pants. They made mess of the trail. Snow was over 4 ft deep and the trench we had to cross after was a #%&*$#. They passed within 8 ft of me. Way to close when a cow and 2 calves are that close. On ski`s yet making escape impossible. Still have dreams about what could have happened.
Close encounter with a prairie rattle snake on Bear Butte State Park outside of Sturgis. We were descending from summit hike and my son who was 14 at the time. Walked in a brushy section of the lower trail and I had to holler at him to stop and I grabbed him by the shoulder. He just about stepped on it crossing the path. He was totally oblivious of the danger. Get down the trail a little further and run into a ranger in a truck and he asked us if we have seen any rattle snakes. Was only about 100ft away from the encounter spot. He was there to collect the snakes that could endanger hikers. He got that snake. Even have some video of the snake.
Rattle Snake video is at 4:20
