I'm tempted to treat myself to a "nice" watch.
Never cared about these things until a few days back when a mate had a Vacheron Constantin on his wrist. The darn thing cost more than a car - I won't go that far - and that tourbillon thingy was very disruptive.
But the hands certainly moved in a very distinctive manner

So here I am.
Eyeing some IWC Pilot's Watches.

Am I lame, just an idiot, or facing mid-life crisis ?
A good mix of all the above ?

The Queen is absolutely ok with it, totally threw me off balance. I'm about to assume it is a normal step into riped manhood...

I will eventually lose it, I always do. And I don't have kids, nobody to inherit it on my deathbed. Screw the spoiled brats!

Vacheron Constantin...sounds like a Russian oligarch.

Just bear in mind, most bread and butter folks won't know what is Vacheron Constantin, or Patek Phillipe unless you go out of your way to tell them, and even then it'll be like casting pearls before swines. I trust you are not buying it to get noticed. That's never a good reason to spend a small fortune.

Thetop limit I would go are sport watches such as Suunto Cores, Casio G-Shocks, Garmin and that's only because I actually use them as EDCs and for working out.

mmmm, what does your wife want that she's letting you get a watch?

Harry, there will always be a little showing off with IWC but, mind you, all done very elegantly. What really got to me is the piece of mechanical craftmanship ticking away.

Thinking back, I would not mind an Italian piece of mechanical craftmanship roaring away either. In red, please. Not too show off either, is it ?

Personally never been a bling fan.
But if you really want to splash out and can afford to do so,
I SAY GO FOR IT.
Been to three funerals in the last couple of months,
Sort of puts things in perspective.




I worked for a guy once who did very well for him self in business he had no family and lived a very frugal life
The guy had hundreds of thousands in the bank.
He died in his fifty's and his estate went to a nephew who spent it all on cars loose women clothes you name it.
There was a lesson to be learnt there me thinks. LoL

What makes those watches worth so much? Won't keep time any better than a $40.00 Timex.

My first nice watch was a $100.00 Seiko (thin dress watch with leather band). My aunt (who I was living with at the time) threw me a small private high school graduation party, the gift was from my future wife/tutor (I passed with the help of them both). I need to get the glass replaced.

Today I wear a similar watch I bought from St. Thomas or St. Maarten (don't remember), it's all the watch I'll ever need. I guess ~$100.00 is my limit.

My wife wears a diamond Bulova given to her by her employer on her 25th anniversary.

Not my kind of thing, but so what? We don't all have to have the same interests, that would be boring. There's nothing wrong with treating yourself from time to time and wanting something nice and well made that screams craftsmanship.
Some people will spend hundreds or thousands on guns they fire a grand total of a few minutes or hours a year. This, you can enjoy daily.

But yeah, plan on spending the same amount when the wife has a similar interest one day you might not understand.

I spent $350 for a nice Citizen watch because my wife was tired of my Casio. I see no reason to spend more.



The Jedi Master

I wear my $30 Timex Ironman pretty much everyday, once in a great while I wear my $80 dress watch. I've never been a bling guy and for me that would be a total waste of money.

I have a Luminox I received as a christmas gift 10 years ago. I love it, I think at the time it retailed for 299 or so. The illumination is fantastic and it keeps accurate time for a swiss quartz movement. My everyday watches are a Casio G-shock with negative display (gives it a tactical look), but impractical sometimes for work where I need to time things. So if I'm flying I usually just use a 40$ timex Ironman. There are some great watches for under $300 (seiko, orient, etc.) that have mechanical movements and/or are automatics that are just as nice looking and keep time just as well as the multi-thousand dollar watches.

I think $65 is the most I've ever spent on a watch. I haven't worn a watch though for about 7 years now.

I picked up this Invicta at a pawn shop for $40. You wouldn't believe the number of compliments I get on it. And to think I was going to put a $1000 Breitling on layaway at that same shop.

I have bought a few 200 - 300 dollar watches, but never more. I see no reason too. But folks will buy luxury items to impress others that give a crap about such. Its like 10000 dollar purses. Its a freaking bag. But if it floats your boat and you have money burning a hole in your pocket, why not.

Citizens are my go to right now, I see no need to spend any more as I'm not a collector or sharp dresser. If I ever strike it big an Omega Speedmaster will go good with my suits and Ferraris though.

You're only an idiot if you buy enough watches to throw yourself into deep debt.

One could say the same thing about any luxury item.

It ain't about function.
