You have to go a long way yourself to get away from WT-ish tendencies I've started finding more and more recently, whether or not that's due to things like mouse aim I don't know. What I do know is that MP right now is just awful, at best 10% seem to bother about objectives and the such. Everyone else is just obsessed about plane kills, no matter how. Bombing people on the taxiway, mindlessly hurtling down from thousands of meters to treetop altitude to be the 7th fighter narrowly avoiding a massive mid-air in the quest to get just a short burst in on a lone damaged 110, or putting your bomber on AP flying straight and level in order to sit at the rear gun and try sniping just one fighter before getting shot down instead of trying to survive, etc. It is too easy to mistake it for WT if you try getting any fun out of public MP servers.

I think right now it is a hybrid, it wants to be considered a serious combat flight sim, but keeps making some apparent focus on more gamey WT type of play.
Some certainly think this is a very good thing ( in fact many that previously posted on forums that it was a horrible idea- they seemed to have changed opinion), and then there are some that think they are starting to get away from the more serious combat flight sim type of game. It kind of started with the level ups, the unlocks, the very gamey SP campaign, and now the mouse aim and mouse control and tanks.
I think they are kind of treading the middle ground right now. It will be interesting as time moves on how they progress and the directions they take.

The mouse aim and tanks are a direct result of the very poor BoM early access sales. BoS was advertised as a serious flight sim, the continuation of the legendary il2. The majority of folk who bought BoS have abandoned it because it isn't what was advertised. BoM sales are poor so the devs have had to dumb the game down even more in the hope of attracting at least some of the Warthunder crowd. It may work for a short while. Unfortunately Bowherever has very little content in comparison with WT. Very little. The word will spread in the Warthunder community. "BoS isn't worth the money" Loft is bumbling from one mistake to the next. The hilarious thing is he HAD the customers and he had a great base to build from. He decided to look elsewhere and make something else.
DCS Kickstarter Wags July 2014 "In this July 2014 update, the primary news is in regards to the restructured backer rewards. After a careful review of the older system under RRG, we found it financially unattainable." Wags October 2017 "the investment vs. generated revenue has been excellent for the World War II aircraft. In fact, the P-51D Mustang has twice the cost effectiveness of the A-10C Warthog."

You may be pretty close in that assessment...

In this video I just watched a tank blowing planes out of the sky with its main gun. Can the AI tanks do that in SP game play during jabo attacks?
Dogfighting is what you do "after" you drop your bombs and blow something up! Can you say "JABO!"

Still, there are tens of THOUSANDS (usually 40.000 - 60.000) online - just let's be fair... Even if half of them were tankers, it's simply incomparable - just like those two games are. And now we have tanks in BoS too.
If you're close, get closer.

The numbers were actually pretty similar before they added tanks. Lowest I saw was low 20k/high teens, averaging around high 20s to high 30s, with numbers above that on the weekends

BoS/BoM is a Bang and Olufsen stereo. Looks kinda interesting, hi fidelity, but too expensive, doesn't do as much and no one else owns one. You can add a touch screen and apps to a Bang and Olufsen stereo, but it is still going to be a clunky old fashioned kinda useless overpriced Bang and Olufsen. War Thunder is Sonos with Spotify. It isn't super hi fidelity, but it sounds great and you get what it promises: 'all the music on earth in every room of your house, wirelessly'. Bang and Olufsen is going bankrupt and looking for a buyer, Sonos has doubled its sales year on year the last three years.

No. IT is not the new WT, but it is the sim that make WT flyers take a step closer in to the CFS genre. That's been said for a long time. Where are the numbers? If even a tiny percentage went to BOS the online wouldn't be so pitiful.

I have played a lot of BoS MP recently.I only play on the one server (DED Normal) but I always cast my eyes over the others. The numbers are quite low as stated by loxitexas. And as a WT player who likes to use the mouse to fly the number of available servers are cut even further by the 'joystick only' servers. In fact as a mouse player the DED normal server is the ONLY server that I can play in that has reasonable numbers of players most times.
I'll persevere as long as I have fun but if the numbers decline I'll be leaving for sure.

I think the numbers of players who are inspired by the low-fidelity games/sims to explore higher fidelity ones is very small. They exist, yes, but not in numbers that will give any real push to the sim market's growth.
I would easily bet there are more sim pilots who get disillusioned with the current state of sims and quit flying altogether than there are new pilots coming in.
Casual simmers, a term I define to mean someone who only flies occasionally because they do more than fly sims, from once a week to a couple of times a month, have been slowly but surely pushed out as the hardcore simmers have sold their "authenticity is king" mantra to the developers to the detriment of making the sim a fun game. The casual simmer never thought that learning the workings of the plane was the most fun, the ultimate goal. A lot of the old sims left a lot to be desired in the realism of the modeling of the various systems and so on, but they made up for it by being a blast to fly.

Nail right on the head there Jedi.It may be 'fun' for some to press every button there is in the cockpit to start the engine but that just makes the game very 'niche' indeed. WT has proved the numbers will come if the game is fun (and easy) to play.It also helps that it's free of course. Right now I'm happy to 'War Thunder' my way through BoS,playing with mouse and outside view. It's more fun for me than I ever had than when I played it with the joystick and treated it as a 'serious' flight sim.

And War Thunder, World or War Planes, Air Combat (console) - to stay with most know - "fun game" don't appeal to these? WT is free, easy, mouse fly, lots of Hollywood explosions, etc. Why they need a "DCS fun game" to fly a couple of times a month? BoS can't be all "hardcore", but can be "fun game" like these, why are not making success? Are at the best, surviving.
