http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/ne...at-97-1-4035347For those of us who know of this man's great accomplishments, no further introduction is needed. For those who don't, Google his name, read, and be impressed. I am incredibly fortunate to have met "Winkle" and talked to him for a bit. All I can say is, what a legend! The term "hero" gets bandied about far too wantonly these days, but this is one person who is more deserving of the title than most. It was incredible to talk to a man who has interrogated both Himmler and Gring at the Nrnberg trials, and who still holds the record for the highest number of aircraft types flown, at 487, as well as being the first to land both a twin-engined aircraft and a jet on an aircraft carrier. I have his signature in my logbook. It is one of my most prized possessions. Rest in peace, Sir!
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

It's sad that aviation has become so de-glamorized.
The days of hero pilots are gone. I loved it when kids used to look at the sky and dream. Now it's not much of a thought anymore. I still look up at the sky and dream. Some kids still do as well. Not many maybe but enough to make lunch at my local airport a very chatty experience sometimes. As for Mr. Brown, what a life!

Got this from an article I read about Brown today.
I'd be crapping in my pants had that been me.
"Brown was a student teacher at Schule Schloss Salem in Germany when he was woken one morning in 1939 to be told: Our countries are at war; he was arrested by the SS and escorted to the Swiss border. An SS officer allowed him to keep his MG Magnette motor car, telling him: We have no spares for it.

...Schule Schloss Salem... BTW that boarding school is still operating. I've been there several times as a kid when one of my friends studied there for some time. It's less than an hour's drive by car from my parent's home. Beautifully situated near the northern shores of Lake Constance. http://www.salem-baden.de/fileadmin/_migrated/pics/Luftbild-Schloss-und-Schlos_01.jpg
