It's kind of neat when crazy TV show plots turn out to not be so outlandish after-all.

IIRC, they have a little text blurb at the end of that episode noting that incident.
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck.” -Robert Heinlein
Not the only time the show pulled from a real incident to show an outlandish aviation achievement that was based in reality. I recall an episode in which Harm landed a C-130 on a carrier.

which in turn was a sort of rememberance to the aviators that landed a c-130 on the Forrestal.
Usually writers can't come up with these ideas because they have zero aviation experience. So the writers talk to actual pilots about the most remarkable things they've done/seen/heard of and then incorporate that. The whole F-14 flameout that leads to Goose's death in Top Gun is a prime example.
