Well this afternoon, I spent some time at a local range and got to try out the FNX 9 and the Walther PPQ. I must admit I'm surprised: the Walther felt better and I was more accurate with it. I'll have to research some more this week.

There's a lot to like in the PPQ, love my M1. You might also look at the H&K VP9, very similar to PPQ, but one more choice in that direction when zeroing in on "just right".

I went to pickup my permit and made my decision. I am now the proud owner of a Walther PPQ 9mm. biggrin

I won't be able to make it out to the range today though. Probably this weekend.

Seconded. I like the looks of the PPQ. I've been thinking about getting one.

Good for you! I'll be very surprised if you end up regretting that choice. Have fun, and be safe!

Just finished cleaning it for first time. I picked up a boresnake, some Venom and Breakfree, along with some ball ammo for the range and hollow points for the home and EDC. I was AMAZED at how much more HP rounds are than ball ammo. More than twice as expensive. OTOH, hopefully I'll never need to use them.

I also picked up a temporary holster. The shop didn't have any holsters with retention clips on them, so finding a good one will be the next priority, along with CCW class. In the Air Force, I used two different types of holsters with the M9. At Macdill, we used Uncle Mike's holsters with a thumb break, and at Lakenheath were required to use the old OD green universal ones with the flap covering them. I'll be looking for something close to the Uncle Mike's holster. Until I get a decent holster with retention (and get in some practice drawing from it), I won't feel comfortable open-carrying.

I have one of these. Its like 99% concealed even if you are running around on the beach with your shirt off. But it also takes about an extra second to draw from it vs a IWB and since it is on your leg you barrel sweep everyone when you sit down... granted the gun should never be able to go off in the holster but I still dont like that.

The PPQ is very similar to the H&K VP9.
And I am super impressed with the VP9.
My friend brought his to the range last night, and I have so much fun shooting it because I make small holes.

To prove it, he put up a fresh target for me, and we ran it out to 15' or so.
I took 3 shots. Aimed for the white hashmark just right of holes.
Yes, I want a VP9. smile

You ever wonder just who is "that guy" who shoots the ceiling and walls at indoor ranges? I do.

I don't, 90% of people can't shoot for garbage. I just assume people are terrible shots until proven otherwise wink

Most folks going to an indoor range are there to make noise and have fun. Skill and safety aren't the top priority.

It's a safe bet that it is more like "those guys/gals". I just hope I'm not there when one of them *really* screws up with the muzzle pointing sideways or further back...

Plan to go out the range tomorrow, and took some time off from work so I can make it to a CCW class on Saturday.

After work today, I went into Gander Mountain to play around with holsters and see if there was a workable one. I settled on a holster from 5.11 with MOLLE straps and velcro adjustments. I'll keep looking for one with better retention and comfort, but this will do for now. The amazing thing is that when I left the store, I looked at the clock on my dashboard and realized I'd been in there for almost TWO HOURS!

They're notorious for getting too hot to hold after a magazine of shots. They're cool but I'd rather see a modernized one.

Several of 'Them' were there the other night.
While I was shooting, I noticed the shooters on my left were not very experienced. Soon afterward, I see little clouds of acoustic tile dust falling from the ceiling. Yep. They be shoot'n upwards.
Thankfully, the Mgmt doesn't allow steel bullets, so not really concerned about hot ricochets.

Left the Pistol Range and went to Rifle Range where other buddy was sighting in his AR.
A group of guys had come in and rented about 4-6 rifles (AR Pistol, AK Pistol, Tavor, PS90, etc) and had no fire discipline. My buddy walked over and talked to them, they said "Its cool, we are just having fun."

THIS is why I love my private range where I am a member. Yes people can be careless out there, but I have not personally seen it.
Whenever I go to the Indoor Ranges, I keep an eye on those around me that are shooting. I don't want to be "swept" by a inexperienced shooter with a loaded unsafed weapon. I have had to call down people for posing with the handgun to take instagram photos. (The Range People will do this, but they don't see everyone all the time)
Most of the time, the new shooters are happy to talk with you and listen to helpful instruction.

Addendum:

Most people just don't think.
They were never trained in proper safety techniques, and it shows.

P7, I haven't heard anything but praise for the VP9.
