Quote:

Dear Pilots!

2015 was an important year for DCS World with the introduction of new Eagle Dynamics Modules like DCS: L-39 Albatros, DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range, and both Su-27 and Ka-50 campaigns. Just as important, we launched our new graphics engine, the ability to support multiple maps, introduction of cooperative multiplayer in the same aircraft, and a rapidly growing number of high quality 3rd party developers. These accomplishments have laid the foundation for great things in 2016 and beyond.

We also launched the new DCS World website that you can view here:
http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/index.php

On both our Youtube channel and Facbook page, we released many new videos of modules and news updates. Here are some of our favorite highlights:

Our fundamental goals for DCS World remain unchanged: we aim to build a deeply immersive and accurate world simulation engine that allows you to enjoy the highest levels of fidelity in aircraft operations from WWII onwards, in wonderfully detailed and varied areas of the globe while offering an ever more credible ground simulation experience.

DCS World 2.0 in 2016 will offer new clouds and weather effects; improved HDR; deferred lighting (more light sources); new FLIR system; an improved Air Traffic Control (ATC) system; enhanced explosions, over-wing vapor, and rain on canopy; procedural grass and vegetation; improved multiplayer with dedicated server support; a new Air Combat Generator with enhanced user control of air-to-air generated missions; new custom overlays option for the Mission Editor, and a new Virtual Reality (VR) tab in Options which will improve the DCS World experience in VR.

Aircraft Modules

Eagle Dynamics’s first goal in 2016 is to wrap up the L-39 Albatros with the addition of the L-39ZA version along with the addition of interactive training missions. We will also continue to improve the cooperative multiplayer experience in the L-39 as a testbed for this technology.

In parallel we continue to work on the F/A-18C Hornet. We are currently working on the cockpit and setting up its functionality. Later in 2016 we plan to release the Hornet as an “Early Access” product that will allow you to participate in early testing.

Our goals for DCS World War II remain unchanged and are still focused on a stable of WWII aircraft in addition to a 1944 map of Northern France with period ground units. We hope to finish the Spitfire IX in mid-2016 followed by the P-47D at the end of the year. We will also continue to fine-tune the P-51D, Fw 190 and Bf 109.

To complete the update to all DCS: Flaming Cliffs 3 aircraft, we plan to add a new 3D external model for the MiG-29 with the incorporation of the Professional Fight Models (PFM) to both the Su-33 and MiG-29.

In the first half of 2016, several new 3rd party aircraft modules will also be launched. These include the F-5E Tiger II by Belsimtek, the SA342 Gazelle by Polychop Simulations, and the AJS-37 Viggen by Leatherneck Simulations.

Map Modules

DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range map is being enhanced with the addition of:
Tonopah Air Force Base
New casino/hotels in the Las Vegas strip
A number of airfields and landing strips in the central (detailed) portion of the map
The National Training Center (NTC)
Improved grass and ground clutter
Plus a host of minor improvements

We have also been working on the DCS: Strait of Hormuz map with the primary focus on F/A-18C operations. For this release we are working on our new T5 dynamic mesh terrain technology that we believe will bring this map a new dimension in quality and detail.

The third map being worked on is the 1944 Northern France map. We see this period map as a cornerstone element to create an immersive World War II air combat experience.

Aircraft Carriers

We see 2016 as a big year for aircraft carrier operations as we plan to release both Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier modules. Both of these modules will be incredibly detailed models with working elevators, interior hanger bays, animated ship systems, and the ability to walk around inside the ships. These will be optional modules that would replace the existing ships currently in DCS World.

New Campaigns

As we release maps and aircraft, we will also continue to offer new campaign modules. These will include both training and combat scenario campaigns.

Summary

We see 2016 as a very exciting time for DCS World with the growth in maps, aircraft, and features. When we include all the new aircraft and map modules being developed by our talented 3rd parties, 2016 will be an exceptional and fun time in the skies of DCS World.

Sincerely,
The Eagle Dynamics Team

I await the new maps, Viggen, and Hornet eagerly. The rest, well, whenever.
WWII is something I can wait for as I have plenty of other WWII sims of varying ages to occupy my time. It's the post-war jets where DCS stands alone (thanks for checking out, TK!) and my interest lies.

Wow, pay for carriers to replace the ones looking bad for being from Flaming Cliffs? What's next, pay for new airfields? Get bent ED...

It would be better to do the same with Maps. Low rez free, high detail/resolution payware. If only it could be "DRM-ed" this way.

I have no problem to pay for palpable work.

Can I quote you when I go to the store to replace my "ugly" Galaxy S3 mini with one new phone? biggrin

Seriously... if they would make those payware models like modules you can play with... why not? Otherwise what would you need a fully modeled Kuz when all you do is take off and land on it?

Working elevators and better textures? That's something that you should be able to expect if you pay top dollars for a Hornet, if it ever comes out.

Don't forget the interior hangar bays, and all the modeled systems! There are a LOT of radar sets on the masts, the sides of the flight deck, and outboard the catwalks that are all going roundy-roundy at the same time. And the Sea Sparrow launchers. And the RAM launchers. And the Nixie spools. And the 0.50 cal mounts.

Granted, they probably won't model the entire crew, as trying to create accurate AI for the nukes in the reactor spaces would require more resources than any computer shy of a Cray Titan could provide.

wink

C'mon! They could just as easily model a single RX crew and duplicate it. neaner

Just a reverse argument here:

No where on that newsletter did it say payware, it said optional.

That would mean ~26 geniuses instead of ~55... Still not enough computing power in a modern PC for that.

Granted, it's not like they need to spend any resources on AI for most of the skittles...

I didn't read anything in there that suggested a functional aircraft carrier, just that it will look pretty. Cats? IFLOLS? ILS? Arresting gear?

I just don't like this trend, it's starting to approach micro transactions. First they did away with the occasional 70% sales (except for the Russian market, that's around their standard price for all modules for some reason), then they started charging for campaigns that used to be included in the modules. Now they're going to charge money for the carrier we'll be landing on when we've already payed them for the plane.

Less and less do I doubt that in a few years we'll see incremental avionics and weapons updates to existing modules as separate modules. "What are you complaining about now, you hater? Of course the devs need to be compensated for the time they spent on making a Sniper pod for the A-10C! I'll happily pay a mere $5US for that." "Awesome, they're making a GBU-54 module!"

Going to agree with the aircraft carrier part. So the rest of us will be stuck with an over decade old 3D model? And how will this effect multiplayer if someone joins a mission and doesn't have this module?

I wouldn't mind if basic carriers with the same functionality they have now are updated with the new 3D models and other minor improvements (weapons changes?) and those that want the internal structure can pay for it. While nice, it isn't $50-80 nice IMO. But I would just like to see a newer carrier.

It also makes me question if we'll get future updates to AI units without paying. I know they're working on an AI B-1B 3D model. What if this becomes a paid module to due to weapon or AI changes? Aircraft, campaigns and maps I can understand but it may get to the point where the base DCS World is no longer free or standard. "Standard" as in anyone can join a mission as the content is the same across all installs, minus flyable aircraft/maps. Which in a way is ironic, because that was the original intention of the project.

The thing is, all the features of the carrier upgrade haven't been announced yet. It's impossible to say if it's worth pay ware or not. If it was just a reskin and elevators with some interior textures then I agree it's not worth it. At the moment there are mods that can already do this for free.

I have the feeling this is going to be a complete revamp to naval aviation in DCS. At the moment there is a lot missing if they are striving for hi fidelity carrier ops. If they can pull this off, then to me personally it will be worth some compensation, how much remains to be seen. So I'm choosing to just be excited that things are progressing and not jump on the micro transaction, nickel and dime band wagon just because it something new to complain about. They haven't even announced a price yet. Sheesh.

I am eager to hear how multi player will be handled though
