I think the ingraining process takes place during your formative years and you take those songs through good times and bad times to your death.

For example, if Im busy at work and have some down time, Ill start tapping out the Morse code drum riff to YYZ with my pen on whatever acoustically pleasing surface I have available smile ...

Im bringing this subject up because I just realized that Bastille Day is also terminally ingrained into my brain! smile ...

Dang! Here I am focusing on RUSH again! I definitely have other bands ingrained that Ill try to keep track of now.

There's no doubt that music leaves its greatest impression on a person's mind during their teenage and young adult years.

This is why we get the phenomena of each successive generation believing that their music was the "best".

Rush is like a drug, I'm really missing hearing them play.

To hear this on the last tour was #%&*$# awesome!...

I gotta get the R40 DVD.

BTW, the making of "Snakes and Arrows" video you posted on another thread (don't see it now) was most enjoyable, another one I hadn't seen before.

Oh man, I hope they decide to do it again one...more...time!

From my most formative years in the early to mid 80s...while I was still in high school and just after...this song is almost an anthem of my growing up years. From the very first "CHK" I start a 4 count, and another 4 count...and then go into my best Angus Young air guitar impression...that I've been doing for over 30 years.

Ohhh yeah!

MUST NOT FOCUS ON RUSH! smile

(Wow, that Jacobs Ladder performance was INCREDIBLE!)

Speaking of the Snakes & Arrows thing, I was just extolling the virtues of Producer Nick Raskulinecz on that one ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFre_O5Aq4Y

I got a kick out of RUSH taking direction from this "punk ass" producer for the greater good. smile

To answer the OP, there's so many.

I think I'll have to go with this one, a little obscure. I had the 8-track and it was a favorite at one of the roller rinks I frequented that played mostly Rock (guess I have a thing for Canadian Rock)...

Just as I was starting HS (1982) they built a new roller rink not far from where I live (since has been converted to a large church). Anyway, I had a crush on this little skinny girl named LeeAnn (wore Lee jeans), but the attraction was never reciprocated. Still, I enjoyed watching her skate and this song reminds me of those days and that awesome rink.

EDIT: If you get a chance, read the 5th YouTube comment where someone (Joe) posted a memory they associate with this song (I can't quote it). Damn.

@Weasy: Ah yessss, AC/DC - Back in Black ... perfect ingraining material! thumbsup

I always wondered why the guitars looked so large on Angus & Malcolm Young so I looked it up ... 52 and 53 respectively. smile

@MarkG: Ya, those roller rinks were quite magical back in the day! I remember Aldo Nova quite well.

Speaking of Canadian bands, have you ever heard of SAGA? ...

They had a few good songs and formed just around the corner from me in Oakville!

Anyway, heres another ingrained in the membrane one from me from the '90s ...

IMO, no other Smashing Pumpkins albums can come close to Siamese Dream, and for that matter Pisces Iscariot (B-sides and outtakes).

I love those two albums and the Corgan, Iha, Chamberlin, Darcy combo. Sonic as hell! (best played at 11)

Not my favourite band - far from it - but Kashmir has stuck and will hit me over and over.

Cheers,

Linebacker, I had forgotten about SAGA "On The Loose" for a long long time until someone posted the studio version on my '80s music thread a couple of years back, it's been on my Shuffle ever since. So is Smashing Pumpkins' "Cherub Rock", that and "Tonight, Tonight" are the only Pumpkins I have.

Wife stayed home today (holiday) and she just went outside to get a UPS delivery, comes back inside with a big smile on her face...

Getting this today is a complete surprise to me, God I love this woman! Perfect timing too, we're making a trial mix and are going to relive the concert right now.

Question for you fellow Rush fans.

In your opinion, what has been their best work post 1990?

I wouldn't know where to begin, there's lots of gems in there post-1990 IMO, some received radio airplay and some didn't.

I've always liked this song off Counterparts (1993)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FBrMZ8Hvac

Another is Driven off Test for Echo (1996)...

Some post-1990 albums I listen to more than others but there's always 3 or 4 songs I enjoy on first listen, the rest has to grow on me. Seldom is there a song that I can't tolerate, but it does happen except on the very best of albums.

How about songs that you'd never want "literally ingrained into your brain"?...

^ I still cannot find the words to express what I think about the above video, even after watching it three times already.

Speechless.

I really like their 2004 cover album called Feedback ...

IMO, really great work on that in terms of the hard rock vibe. I keep wishing they actually wrote all those hippie songs! smile
