Join us today for some Vietnam ARMA 3 action. 4PM Eastern US start time.

Probably won't have any new missions, but then again, we haven't really completed some Meatshield's missions yet. :P

great play tonight ar15

Dont think of it as being vastly outnumbered ... but just having a large target selection.

The only thing more accurate than incoming fire, is incoming friendly fire

Tracers work BOTH ways...

That was fun...but awfully hard. Sagan (I believe it was) asked if any of us might be interested in a bigger Vietnam experience with a bigger download. Count me in the "yes" category!

There's a Huey pack most guys who run this mod are using.

I also talked to a clan tonight who only does unsung now. They are using ACE3 with very few issues.

So we might be able to add that stuff in pretty easily. I'd guess most of us already have ACE3 anyway.

Another thing I was thinking as a suggestion for the mission makers is having more patrol based missions and missions where the encounter and outcomes are unknown. Some of the most fun we had tonight was slowly walking through the jungle waiting for an ambush.

Like more search and destroy type stuff with an LZ insertion and extraction. Or inserting a ways out, fighting to and seizing a hill, and then extracting.

Those kinds of missions feel more authentic to the Vietnam setting then the typical "go to point A, destroy it, mission ends."

Adlabs and I have posted some screenshots from today's missions.

http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/4215126/Unsung_Arma3_play#Post4215126

If you know the name/link of the mods/addons that other groups use, regarding Vietnam, please post them, so we can review them for use.

The stock missions played over the last few weeks have that type of patrol mission (ex. Northern Patrol). They haven't been made into missions in Unsung yet.

TBH, this Vietnam mod was only supposed to run through December, as a change of pace. If there's a demand for it (good numbers), we may have to take it more seriously and see how to tweak things. (speaking for myself and not the head honcho)

This is the Huey addon some clans are using and the one that the Unsung developers use as well.

http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=27960

This includes all the CAS variants of the Huey among the cargo versions, including the off shoot AH-1 Cobra.

Hopefully we continue this. There was a good turnout today with 10+ showing up.

The combat is such a change of pace after years of what we normally do. More close quarters and a ton more tension then your normal assault on Altis or wherever. That and Vietnam era equipment and the jungle are just cool.

Apart from an interest in the Vietnam war anyway, I really enjoy these sessions because they aren't top-heavy with mods. A while ago, I was briefly with an Arma clan which every week seemed to adopt another mod that either added to, or replaced ones we already had. It got to the point where we needed training sessions before the game started, and then in the heat of battle, most of us were fumbling around trying to remember key combinations for functions we didn't really understand. It became too much for me, and I lost interest.

I'd certainly like to see the Unsung Vietnam mod developed further - obviously the inclusion of Hueys, M-60 machine guns, M-113 APCs and a PBR would be very welcome. But one of its strengths is its simplicity. For example, you aren't going to weapons crates and scrolling through lists of guns and equipment. You just spawn with the weaponry and gear that the average grunt actually carried. Maybe there could be a custom crate with a few things like extra belts for the M-60, satchel charges and medical kits, but that's all.

Anyway, these Vietnam games are terrific - I hope they continue and that we get more people who would like to play Arma 3, but have been put off by over-complicated mods. Thanks to the mission builders and players last night - it was Number One !

I come and go. So I should hesitate to make any promises about what future changes will keep me active. Sims just don't have the hold on me they once did. But if what I say carries any weight even if I never show up again smile I believe I would enjoy seeing more of this mod because:

1) It's simpler. Less sights, scopes, UAVs to manage.
2) More helicopters. Helos shine in ARMA. But the rest of CAS basically sucks. For much of Vietnam, the Huey performed a marginal CAS role that can be modeled in ARMA in a more realistic way then can their fantasy A-10(-ish)s and Su25(-ish)s.
3) Unsung has created an environment quite different in feel and sound then anything else in ARMA I have played. If SimHQ wishes to run more than 1 ARMA event each week. The contrast that Unsung offers over the more modern raids we do on other nights could make for a nice mix.
4) The Fog of War in Unsung feels real. As a marginal player, I feel clueless most of the time. I accurately simulate a pot-smoking, high-school dropout draftee quite nicely.
5) More helicopters smile
