Where does it say anything about the display itself? As in, the actual panel and the lenses? (the latter probably being the most important part). It doesn't, but the writer clearly prefers the Vive over the OR (see the last paragraphs) which suggests that, to he at least, it does "look better" without going into specifics. The Oculus Rift is now on sale for $600, and the HTC Vive will likely cost even more when it arrives in homes this April.
I dont think it matters. No other VR headset can immerse users like the Vive, and the Vive Pre takes a huge leap forward by including a camera that connects its virtual holodeck space to the real people and objects in a room. That eliminates the alienation felt when wearing a virtual reality headset, which is normally blinding, and may lead to games and apps that transform real world objects and people, rather than ignoring them.
Im still excited about Oculus Rift, cant wait to see more from the HoloLens, and the Gear VR won the Digital Trends Product of the Year for 2015, but damn it, Im putting my virtual money on the HTC Vive.
This is virtual reality. Everyone else needs to catch up.
That is pretty much the gist of most such reviews I've seen, the Or / Vive specs (resolution, refresh rates, FOV etc.) may be identical but many who have tried both prefer the Vive.

But that has nothing to do with what we're discussing. He prefers it because Vive works around the Lighthouse / AR experience, Rift does not (out of the box) That is down to the individual and is a subjective opinion. The Rift, on paper, uses a higher quality panel and some very expensive SLR-level lenses. When you see in-depth comparisons between the CV1 and Vive Pre display and lenses, you will see talk about screendoor effects, fresnel, aberration and stuff like that. That's where the Oculus excels because they use a very high-end panel and some very expensive lenses -- You can see some of this mentioned in the Reddit comparison I posted. It helps keep you immersed, not suddenly yank you out of the experience. Discussing the SUBJECTIVE approach to VR, whether you like the AR / Lighthouse experience or primarily going to use it seated, then it might fall in favour of the Vive because it is more advanced thanks to Lighthouse. I would also love to try it but I know, I don't have room for it in my house, nor do I want cameras hanging on my walls just for that. So a reviewer walking into a booth where everything is set up, experiencing this, compared to the the regular consumer having to potentially nail cameras to the wall, change batteries and have wires running across the floor, which may change their view. But again, Vive Pre isn't the consumer version, so they might also see a bump in lens / panel quality, who knows? As mentioned, exciting times ahead and if Vive reaches the level of Rift, lens wise, then I might also switch depending on the price of course.

Where is proof of that? I've never heard that. Even if true, does it make a visible difference?

I'd be more or less on board, but the USB port requirements are the sticking point for me. Seriously. Apologies if you're hardware-savvy enough to already be aware of this, but motherboards often have extra USB headers for front panel connections which might not be used in your case. Otherwise, a $10 PCI card would give you up to four USB 3.0 ports if you've got a spare slot. or you could just buy a powered USB hub. don't get why people even care about this, it's a total non issue. usb hubs are like 10-20$ and yes SLR quality lenses will make a huge impact on the visual quality. optics are the most important part of any good display

Yes of course, but it seems strange that you require 4 of them and both 2 and 3 types. How many times you see a device requiring that much USB? I have only one 3.0 left and tons of 2 because the hub is plugged there. So it's a little annoying to either buy another hub for the 3 type or move the hub to the 3 port and... anyways.
When you're feeling sad, just remember that somewhere in the world, there's someone pushing a door that says "pull".

I think its going to take another couple of design generations before VR gaming is much more than novelty. This

I can't afford it. I have 2 7970's and thought that would be enough, because I play most games in Eyefinity. I'm shocked that I need to upgrade even more from that? I am leaning toward HTC's VR.
