Looks like they are giving away free Rift units to Kickstart backers at the Dev kit level.

Apologies if you're hardware-savvy enough to already be aware of this, but motherboards often have extra USB headers for front panel connections which might not be used in your case.

Otherwise, a $10 PCI card would give you up to four USB 3.0 ports if you've got a spare slot.

From a Reddit Q&A with Oculus founder Palmer Luckey:

Quote:
The price is what it is, I understand bleeding edge electronics are expensive. My question is "why was the messaging about price so poor? $599 is not in the ballpark of $350"

[]palmerluckey

I handled the messaging poorly. Earlier last year, we started officially messaging that the Rift+Recommended spec PC would cost roughly $1500. That was around the time we committed to the path of prioritizing quality over cost, trying to make the best VR headset possible with current technology. Many outlets picked the story up as Rift will cost $1500!, which was honestly a good thing - the vast majority of consumers (and even gamers!) dont have a PC anywhere close to the rec. spec, and many people were confused enough to think the Rift was a standalone device. For that vast majority of people, $1500 is the all-in cost of owning Rift. The biggest portion of their cost is the PC, not the Rift itself.

For gamers that already have high end GPUs, the equation is obviously different. In a September interview, during the Oculus Connect developer conference, I made the infamous roughly in that $350 ballpark, but it will cost more than that quote. As an explanation, not an excuse: during that time, many outlets were repeating the Rift is $1500! line, and I was frustrated by how many people thought that was the price of the headset itself. My answer was ill-prepared, and mentally, I was contrasting $349 with $1500, not our internal estimate that hovered close to $599 - that is why I said it was in roughly the same ballpark. Later on, I tried to get across that the Rift would cost more than many expected, in the past two weeks particularly. There are a lot of reasons we did not do a better job of prepping people who already have high end GPUs, legal, financial, competitive, and otherwise, but to be perfectly honest, our biggest failing was assuming we had been clear enough about setting expectations. Another problem is that people looked at the much less advanced technology in DK2 for $350 and assumed the consumer Rift would cost a similar amount, an assumption that myself (and Oculus) did not do a good job of fixing. I apologize.

To be perfectly clear, we dont make money on the Rift. The Xbox controller costs us almost nothing to bundle, and people can easily resell it for profit. A lot of people wish we would sell a bundle without useless extras like high-end audio, a carrying case, the bundled games, etc, but those just dont significantly impact the cost. The core technology in the Rift is the main driver - two built-for-VR OLED displays with very high refresh rate and pixel density, a very precise tracking system, mechanical adjustment systems that must be lightweight, durable, and precise, and cutting-edge optics that are more complex to manufacture than many high end DSLR lenses. It is expensive, but for the $599 you spend, you get a lot more than spending $599 on pretty much any other consumer electronics devices - phones that cost $599 cost a fraction of that to make, same with mid-range TVs that cost $599. There are a lot of mainstream devices in that price-range, so as you have said, our failing was in communication, not just price.

In what 'ballpark' can we expect Touch's price to be?
No more ballparks for now. I have learned my lesson.

How many games can we expect to have available to us by years end?
At least 100 - Over 20 Oculus Studios titles, many more 3rd party titles.

John Carmack tweeted that he expects gaming to occupy less than 50% of the time we spend in the RIFT.. what kind of experiences is he eluding to. Oculus Medium? Toy box? How much is there to do in Toy Box?
Somewhat surprisingly, the majority of time spent right in Gear VR is video and experiences, not games. Over time, VR span beyond games, much like the evolution of computer and mobile platforms before it. Right now, gaming is going to be the primary driver of PC VR, but the content base will expand over time.

What kind of prices can we expect Movies/Experiences to have in the Oculus Store? Most experiences in the GearVR store have been free.
There will be the range of prices from free to higher priced AAA games. The pricing will be similar to what you see in console PC games.

Can we have some detailed information about the screens/displays? FOV/Resolution/pixelfill/pentile/etc... these are custom displays, we want to know everything
We will be sharing more soon. We have done a lot of work optimizing and building these displays, we definitely want people to see how awesome they are.
Post too long, about to post next bit...

So they seem happy with pricing due to still having high demand, but he just offers a lame excuse on why his previous offered price estimate was so low.

My guess, Facebook seems to want to market this as their "iPhone", but the difference is they are dealing with PC users, which are far more cost conscious than Apple users.

This might end up being Facebook's "Google Glass".

Well, in reality they are going for a market which has GFX cards selling for the same, monitors for more, and mobile phones for similar prices.

I'm going to wait for the Vive, as my ecosystem is 99% steam based right now. (Maybe I need to edit my signature)

However, $599 is a tiny price to pay for VR immersion in flight sims.

I have an AMD FX8320 and a Radeon R9 something or other I slapped in there that I bought used. I haven't had any issues with anything save FSX which is a dog in my experience in general. Even that was immensely playable, just the odd hiccup here and there.

Space sims, racing sims, it's all incredible in VR. That's just with the DK2, never mind full retail.

Flight sims are just absolutely astounding. I'm in the plane. It's that simple. Flying an ME-410 with the 50mm cannon is just absolutely out of this world. I now understand what cramped means when I fly an HS-129 in VR. I have to duck to see the gauges under the canopy ledge. I have yet to try DCS World because AMD, but that must be very cool.

I know we're all invested in our screens, and track IR. I'm the guy that had a basement wall solely for my projector to race or fly with. VR absolutely blows anything out of the water by a huge margin. Track IR and an LCD panel is what HMS Hood was to the Bismarck.

I feel like my understanding of air combat has increased quite a bit because of it.

Don't sell it short, at the very least have a simmer give you a demo if you haven't tried it.

Yeah, June is the current estimate. Palmer was also surprised by the amount of pre-orders. He said they saw more orders in the first few minutes, than he expected in hours. Also heard the number 60.000+ thrown around within the first 6 hours, that may not be correct though.

There's a lot of interest, despite the entry price. Obviously quite a few people placed an order as a 'safety net', just to get in early while they wait for Vive information. Still, the fact that you'd whip out your credit card to order it even as a backup solution, says a lot.

Glad I got my order in very early. Couldn't wait until June, no way :P

The price is a bit steeper than I expected (I always thought it would be around $500) so I am not spending that kind of money without reviews of both OR and Vive production models, reviews that are relevant to flight simming. If the camera on the Vive will allow it to combine real word and virtual world and I can map my real world flight sim cockpit into a flight sim that will be worth at least another $100 above the OR price.

Yeah, it's going to be some very exciting months leading up to the price announcement of the Vive. The Vive has a lower resolution screen, lower FoV and higher latancy. The construction itself is supposedly slightly cheaper. However you have the camera on the set, plus the entire lighthouse setup. It is said it's going to be more expensive but maybe they will position themselves very close to the Oculus, in which case many will probably switch. If the slightly lower end components on it can actually price it equally or lower, then they have a winner.

Personally, I have no real interest or room for that matter, for the lighthouse / moving around features of the Vive. I'm more interested in the best screen, widest FoV and lowest latency, so at this point in time I'm pretty set on the Rift.

But again, it can all change over the next few months. Luckily it's a matter of sending an email to cancel the Rift pre-order.

Argh, I wasn't aware that the Oculus would have a better screen?

Yup, it's supposedly a fantastic screen from the reports at CES.

Someone wrote a nice comparison over on Reddit; https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/3zw8ta/ces_cv1_impressions_vs_vive/

The first joysticks weren't that great. The first mice left a lot to be desired, as did the first gamepads.

I'm sure the 3rd or 4th gen will entice me finally to get one. But not first gen, I'm just not an early adopter kind of person anymore.

Nor was I.

Both have 2160 x 1200 resolution, both have 90hz refresh rate, both 110 degree FOV.

And in every side by side review between the latest version of each, most I have read actually preferred Vive.

We shall see.

Interesting, got any links for these reviews? I have yet to read a single person preferring the the Vive display over the CV1 display. Would love to hear their view on it.

Now that is based on pre- CES reviews over the past 3-4 months. The only post CES review I've read is below, and it leans to Vive as well.

Where does it say anything about the display itself? As in, the actual panel and the lenses? (the latter probably being the most important part).

I would buy this if I had followed it more closely. Unfortunately, I've never tried VR, I wear glasses, and I get sick easily when playing FPS. Not to mention I need to see my touchscreen setup to manipulate cockpit controls when flying BMS or DCS. Still very tempted to buy even if just for Elite or Star Citizen.

Paying that much for a "demo" seems a lot. I wonder what the resell value would be?

You shouldn't worry about your glasses, Ice, all of the VR devices have been made to accommodate glasses. The Oculus GearVR for Samsung phones works fine with my monitor glasses. Getting sick easily may be a strike against VR though. The HTC Vive has a passthrough camera, that allows you to see through it without taking it off, also has a feature to 'map' objects, so you can see them when using it.
