By the way, if you are a Scifi fan and you like authors like Clarke, Asimov, and Heinlein - who would you recommend from among more modern scifi authors? I am about to read "The Martian" by Andy Weir after I complete the Rama series. I enjoyed the movie "The Martian" and I am ready for something new.

You might also try Alistair Reynolds - "Revelation Space".
Also "The Expanse" series by James S. A. Corey, first book is "Leviathan Wakes"

the twist, although funny, was not necessary for the story itself. The story would've worked out the same without the twist, and I didn't see the need to reread the book expecting to see the story in another light.

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more inexplicable.
There is another theory which states that this has already happened.
