Yep, its too bad Flame Wars took this place down. Such an easy format to open and poof, everything new that was written was there.

I didn't see flame wars take this place down so much as the end of further development. Modders had largely hit the limits of what could be done with the open parts of the SF series before SF2 was even released. SF2 locked a few things down that had previously been open and finally stopped growing in scope/features within a year of the release of SF2NA. The SF series was my primary means of entertainment from the day I bought the original Walmart release until the announcement of the MiG-21bis addon for DCS:World. That's a lot of years to be spending every free minute on a single game of rather limited complexity. I still play SF2 an hour or two every month to enjoy the excellent planeset that may never be equaled in any other combat flight sim. It remains the best combat simulator for the Century series and F-4 Phantom eras.

The SF2 community was never a very large crowd and has dwindled down to a hand full of fanatics and a few newbies.

Most people got bored and moved on to something newer, different, and/or better.

Lack of multiplayer in series II didn't help.

Or the hard headed who wouldn't quit. Mue's Toolbox is long overdue. The ability to grab a target and drag it across the terrain is something that I was looking for for years. Last night when I grabbed two cranes that were in the middle of a city and pulled them out and could see them on the edge of the water...wow. Or the lod viewer...not ever having to get an ASE file made again to paint something with accuracy.

I don't know about fanatic, but hard headed definately! No where else will you get the same selection of Korean War through Cold War jets. Simplified? Yes, but when done right it's not easy.

I wish there was some way to convince TK to implement multiplayer in SF2. Sell it as a $20 DLC or something.

Something like an MP Strike Fighters 2: Vietnam will likely never be done in my lifetime. The ability to fly against humans in a Phantom vs. MiGs would be amazing (over the Vietnam map). So much potential there.

True. But MP still works on LAN even with Win 7.

The issue was DirectX. Per everyone's expectation, TK went with newer DirectX for better graphics/performance at the cost of losing support for multiplayer, as the later DirectX dropped the slow/unstable/obsolete DirectPlay library.

A fragmented mess of half baked mods?

The dogfights are massive and pretty wild. The campaign is dynamic. The missions are quite cinematic. Open modding. Only other with similar traits is Falcon4.0
It's not a bad game. It's just out of consumer cycle.

That didn't happen with Falcon 4.0 when it's source code was "released".

While my post was sort of tongue in cheek, I kind of was exactly thinking about Falcon 4.0

I know memory can has rose tinted glasses but the whole thing of : Free Falcon, Red Viper, the initial stages of BMS and the relatively legit Allied Forces was actually quite close to a fragmented mess of half baked mods.

EDIT: and I'm pretty sure I forgot some as well.

It took several years since the "release" of the code for the final BMS to exist.
And at this moment in time there's still fragmentation with some models/mods within BMS as well.

I rest my case.

With respect to Falcon, Red Viper, Free Falcon etc. what you call "fragmentation" I call choices.
