I too had the 2 choices and saw on the top of the menu that if available, you should choose 64 bit. I initially couldn't get 64 bit to work, so I selected 32 bit. It opened and I immediately wanted to go back and try 64 bit. So, the only way I could get 64 bit to play was to validate my files, not once but three times. Each time it validated, it installed some additional files. Finally, after all was installed, 64 bit now opens and plays.
I just added this because I kept getting the Server Status-Issues Detected message and I assumed that meant my system was incompatible with their 64 bit, though my OS and GPU would say otherwise....so I began the validate local files process. It now works, with what I assume has both 32 bit and 64 bit installed.
Can or should the 32 bit be un-installed? Does it matter?
Apologies, not trying to hijack your thread, but I didn't really want to start a new one for a similar train of thought.

Does anyone who bought ED via Steam actually have a straight-forward answer on how to install Horizons ?
The more I read the posts, the more confused and uncertain I get.
I'm not even sure strykerpsg has got 64-bit installed. I'm not sure he does either. LOL! Way to rain on my parade, though you are right. I am not certain I have it either, although I do get 4K resolution, so I'm happy for now.

I'm not even sure strykerpsg has got 64-bit installed. I'm not sure he does either. You can now buy Horizons on Steam. And if you bought it on the FD store, you can get a key (from what I've heard). I bought Horizons on the FD store page. I uninstalled my Steam ED. Then downloaded the FD launcher from my account with them, and installed Horizons from there. When the download was done, I had both Horizons and 64 bit ED available for play. BTW, I don't even know if it's possible to tell if the 64 bit ED is running based on visuals or anything. I think it's just improved memory interface and under-the-hood stuff, right?

I have pretty good download speeds here in Korea, and since the baseline game is also part of Horizons....may simplify patching in the future.

I believe you are correct adlabs6 - no difference on a purely visual level. The 64-bit allows for better processing therefore making performance better under similar circumstances.
And I think the rest of you guys are making this too complicated. Did you buy Horizons? Then click to install it. What else you going to do? Horizons/64-bit will then be installed. After install you will have a couple of choices you can disregard. Click "Elite Horizons" and play. Okay, so according to the forums, I went over the Dark Side and purchased Horizon's too. If I understand correctly, Horizon's has the base game with it, so no need to leave ED installed as well?

When I clicked to install Horizons, it also allows me play of ED 64bit from that same download/install. Not sure why I'd fire ED up, to be honest, after getting to grips with Horizons!
