I recently got home from an 8 day/night hospital stay for major surgery. I was given great care. I have a new found respect for nurses. I was blown away at the work load they can handle, their skill level, and their level of human compassion. One thing that I found crazy, is there doesn't seem to be any visiting hours rules any more. While I was there both my room mates never seemed to have less than 10 people in the room. They were loud as hell. Including little kids. It was like a big party. I mean these people even brought in food. There was no consideration at all that the guy lying two feet away just had surgery and needed some damn rest. These parties would start about 10AM go on to about 10 11 PM every night. The poor nurses seemed afraid to say anything. I complained, but the hospital didn't do much. Only one night did a hospital administrator come in the room and tell these people this was a hospital and people were trying to rest. And all that did was make the people mad. How dare anybody ask them to be quite in a hospital. I am not surprised by the lack of consideration for other people in todays world, but I though hospitals had some rules for this. I was just really surprised.

Sounds pretty crappy, perfect situation for staff to issue a "get the hell out and stay out" but as you witnessed that's not likely to happen in today's castrated world.

That's unfortunate. For that length of stay, you should have a private room. For even 1 night you should have a private room IMO.

that's crazy, the hospitals in NH have rules for sure! Just last year when my Mom went into the ER all 3 of her boys showed up with their kids. So we had 11 people there and they told us we could only have 3 so we'd have to rotate in and out.

Also, after their families would finally leave, these guys would keep the volume on their TV up loud and then proceed to fall asleep and start snoring loud as hell. Everyone was given head phones asked to use them at night. Not these chumps. Mercifully, some nights a nurse would come in and just turn their TV off because they were asleep. I was told that the only people getting private rooms were people with things like Mersa and staff infections. Plus, I can't afford that. From a medical point of view, I though rest was key. I have other surgeries that I have to have in the next 6 months. I don't know If I can take another round of that. Is there a way to fake a staff infection? Just kidding.

After I got out of ICU, I was put in a 4 bed ward to wait for transfer to the Heart Inst. I guy came in with something wrong with his stomach and he moaned loudly all night. Yup, no sleep. Asked the nurses to give him something to knock him out but they didn't or couldn't. That night more loud moaning, so I grabbed a blanket and pillow and went to the lounge. The nurses freaked out when they did a bed check. Don't know if they found me in the lounge but got a blast for not telling them where I was going. Would have told them but no one was on the desk. The guy was gone that day.

Which hospital LB4LB? I work at St. John Moross, and considering it's location just outside of Detroit (technically in Grosse Pointe), the general demographic fits your description. I would visit my grandmother at Beaumont in Troy, and I would just shake my head at just how much more professional everything was in comparison, not to mention it was absolutely the cleanest hospital I've ever seen.

Beaumont Royal Oak. First time there, I am a Downriver guy. I had always heard good things about the place. My surgeon said the surgery robot was one of the best there. Again, the nurses were outstanding, but them and the administration seemed liked they were too afraid to say anything. I think you should have to sign a visiting hours/rules agreement at admission. I am actually going to ask to have my other surgeries closer to home.

Trust me. You do not... I repeat DO NOT... want a staff infection. Yes the private room is nice but crapping all over yourself, getting sick on the antibiotics, six weeks of IV medical treatment, six more months of oral antibiotics and any possible tissue damage caused by the infection (especially if it gets to your heart) is not something you want to risk.

Been there. Done that. TWICE. I wouldn't wish it on a serial killer.

I do concur. Nurse are highly undervalued. Just the compassion showed me during my hospital stays by these ladies and gentleman made me feel just that much better. There's nothing more humiliating than not being able to take care of your basic needs. Having professional, compassionate, caring, empathetic nurses probably had as much to do with saving my life as the doctors and infectious disease staff did.

What to do about noisy patient guests? Keep going higher up the ladder. You're there to convalesce and so is the other patient. No one should have to be disturbed by what amounts to rude people. I know they don't mean to in most cases but if it gets to where the staff are afraid to say something then move on up the ladder.

When you are lying there helpless, it's scary to start complaining. The nurses can't be in the room all the time. I just remember the days when a very tough nurse would come in the room and tell people to shut up or get the hell out.

I understand. You never know what to expect in today's world. You'd think people would respect that a person is sick never mind not retaliate on a person in a hospital bed because he asked for the peace and quiet he has the right to have.

I'll leave it at that and a sorry for your experience.

Sorry, but at the hospital I work at the visitors would have been escorted out. Even during the day we have quiet hours. That said, the healthcare sector is going thru some tough times right now and morale has suffered especially when the patient to nurse ratio has nearly doubled.

The road less traveled is filled with fewer needy people.

Chef, it seemed liked the nurses were working their butts off and we not happy. But it in no way affected the care I was given. They seemed to believe the administrators were making all the money and they were doing all the work.

Some people are just rude and inconsiderate. I hate rude and inconsiderate people. I have personally gotten on the case of young people in their expensive SUV that they didn't work a honest day work to earn and playing their music so loud that all the cars next to them were vibrating and reverberating.
