Probably no survivors. Plane had problems and was trying to land at local airport after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh, bound for St Petersburg. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-34687139http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-34687309RedToo.

ISIS has the cash to get some mobile SAM units like the SA-9 or SA-11.
I believe this is retribution for Russia's involvement in Syria. http://www.flightradar24.com/blog/crash-of-metrojet-flight-7k9268/I doubt that short range SAMs such as the SA-9/11 could engage an airliner at 33,000 ft. More like 11,000 - 12,000 ft. I also doubt that IS-affiliated terror groups (Ansar Beit al-Makdis, who claimed responsibility via Twitter) in the Sinai have any surface to air missiles, especially of the kind that could shoot down an airliner at cruising altitude. Never say never, but this scenario does not seem very likely to me ATM.

Even the earliest model Buk SAM can reach over 45K feet, however assuming this is not an accident I would be inclined to go with sabotage rather than a missile, if not by way of ISIS then perhaps an intelligence agency?

I find it hard to believe that the Egyptian Army - or Egypt's neighbor Israel - would allow some obscure terrorist group to own and operate SA-6s.

I fly to/from Sharm at least once a year and i can tell you Egyptian airport security is pretty serious. I doubt you could sneak a butterfly knife in you luggage, nevermind a bomb. Obviously SAM is out of the question. Just regular terrorist propaganda, same old. Terrain really rugged, not the best place for a forced landing

The plane in question suffered a tailstrike some years ago. If not properly repaired, those can lead to a weakening of the rear pressure bulkhead. That said, it's far too early to say anything about what happened. Will be interesting to see what the flight recorder data says.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

It's funny how at some point people blamed passenger jets such as Tu-154 as unsafe, and now Russians switching to really old Airbuses and Boeing's. And in the end same problem persists, poor maintenance results in crashes.

They are now saying an "External Impact" caused the crash.
