This is the original recording from the incident that occurred on January 4, 1989 between U.S. F-14 Tomcats and Libyan Mig-23 Floggers. If you are a military flight sim junkie you should be able to recognize many audio snippets that were used in Jane's F-15 Falcon 4. Not much visual until the last few minutes but the audio is intense:

6:20 - Alpha Bravo seems like he's trying to tell them not to fire. He's called in "warning yellow" earlier (4:38) but I'm not sure if he's been acknowledged. Definitely not by the main speaker on the comms.
8:00 - Main speaker directs the flight to go north, go down low, and accelerate to 500 knots. What gets me is the fear/anxiety in his voice. He just splashed 2 bandits. Why would he be scared?

My take is that they were still pumped with full adrenaline soon after a fight or flight situation.
If you listen at approximately 8:56 a voice reports "bogies on the nose, 1 2 5." If that's correct there were more Libyan MiGs in the air, could be the reason why they wanted out of the area. And apparently it was the RIO who launched the first Sparrow, hence why the pilot says "aw, Jesus," as he was surprised when the missile was launched.

Given what I know about U.S. ROE of the time period, I'd be anxious too...

Let's see, REAL Air to Air combat with missiles and closing speeds of like 1,000 mph.......
Nah....nothing to get anxious about.

Ummm......because it is freaking scary? He'd just shot at and possibly killed people and they had engaged and shot at his flight? It isn't a #%&*$# game.

The sound at 7:39 played in my head the moment I clicked on this thread. I don't remember playing Falcom 4.0 that much but that sound is so familiar ("eRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.... rrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRR").

This all was monitored on board the JFK, and the Tomcat crews were given the authorization: "Warning yellow, weapons hold" -- indicating they recognized as being under threat ("warning yellow") and were free to prepare for and engage in combat ("weapons hold", as opposed to "weapons tight"). The fighters launched two Sparrows and a Sidewinder, with one Sparrow and the Sidewinder scoring kills. Both Libyan pilots ejected successfully, but were apparently lost at sea. The press made a bit of a fuss about the kills, misinterpreting the "weapons hold" command as meaning "hold your fire" and suggesting the Tomcat crews were trigger-happy, but the Navy said it was done by the book.
Interesting to note also is that the reason why the pilot didn't have tone was because he apparently had the volume control down on the Sidewinder growl. When he realized it, he turned it up and that's when you hear the tone in the recording.

that always got me - i can't understand why he would turn down the tone on the siewinder. i mean i know it's annoying but that stuff's important. but he shoulda been able to tell by the hud cues anyway? ah well.
intense incident but pretty one sided, we don't know what the intentions of the other guys were, but they never fired.

They were pointing a gun around a shopping center, regardless of intentions they done made a stupid mistake. They made their choices and an expected (and proper) response followed per doctrine.
As for the volume control there's no use Monday Morning Quarterbacking it, there could have been a billion and a half reasons.
