Rick,
That's precious - escorting A-flight. I suppose that's how they learn to do their job.
Congrats on another kill.

I have often thought the same!

Wish list item? yep

Airfield attack at Phalempin
B-flight: 5 craft led by Oscar Trask. No A-flight.
At the crack of dawn we all loaded up on bombs and went to find the German 'drome.

We get to the airfield and see planes readying for take off. I let everyone take care of the structures and I change heading and aim for the planes. Release! As my bombs hit the field the last of the enemy planes is already in the air.

5 Albatros D.V's. Will have to do this the old fashioned way. Wouldn't you know it? It's our old friends Jasta 12 - the black tails.

I went for the one that climbed the highest.

The 2 Vickers made short work of him as he exploded in front of me.

The rest of the schwarm realized what's happening and were already in the landing pattern. The 2 in front were already landing, but the 3rd was still high up concentrating on a proper landing approach. He didn't even see who shot him as I watched him plummet to the ground.

I made another pass for the last Hun attempting to land, but misjudged his speed and had to go for another pass. I sent a long volley as he was taxiing - he didn't reach the end of the field. All this was witnessed by my wingman, who stuck with me through all 3 kills and confirmed my claims.

The entire flight returned home with no losses, apart from plenty of damage due to airfield's ground defenses.

Mission 8, 11 November 1917 - Intercept

Well, after the last close call, the commander gave me an extra two days off* to recover. Wouldn't you know, when I got back half my fellow pilots were flying shiny new Sopwith Camels. I'm still in my poor old pup, which they managed to bring back from the front in pieces and reassemble for me.

The commander told me to lead this flight, some enemy two seaters had been spotted and the commander told me to knock them down. So me in my little pup and four of the boys in their shiny new camels headed off into the wild blue yonder.

We saw the two seaters - Rumplers - over the lines just south of Monchy-le-Preux and took chase, coming upon them as they began to descend to home. I gave the order to attack but watched with horror as one of the boys crashed into one of the two seaters! Maybe these Camels aren't all they're cracked up to be. A few moments later, I fired shots into one of the two seaters but he dived away, so i focused on the last Rumpler in line. Coming in slowly and from below, I fired a nice long stream of lead into the plane and it skewed forward into a stall. The gunner was still firing at me but from the way the plane flopped around, I'm sure I hit the pilot. Apparently none of my wingmen saw it though because the commander denied my claim. That man is starting to get on my nerves... maybe I need to fly a two seater and put him in the observer's seat to get a claim approved?! Of course, this is the first time I've been this sure that I've taken down one of the enemy so perhaps his skepticism is justified. One of these days, I'll show everyone...

*the two days for last month? If I misunderstood and we weren't supposed to take the two days for finishing October I just won't take any for November

I nearly had a disaster. A file (or possibly files) became corrupted and I had to re-install WOFF. Which didn't work.
I've been re-installing several times since Thursday and only today did I get an installation that I could play.

Thanks to Robert_Wiggins' wonderful backup program, Thomas deTankengine (and Cadogan West) can fly again.

He's on mission 6 and the Camels are just arriving. No kills to Thomas' name yet, although he has had two tangles with Pfalzs.

Mission 8
Line Patrol
November 22, 1917

Well, I did it again. We were ordered up to the line again to see if we could spook up some trouble. It weren't long before a flight of five Albatros D.Vs were diving on us looking to brawl. Our new mounts are a bit skittish, but they can turn on a dime and it wasn't long before I had a Hun in my sights and gave him a good burst. I could've sworn I heard a scream, but that can't be possible because of the engine noise. Anyway, the Hun machine noses over and spins into the ground.

I quickly look around and see another Hun mixing it up with one of my brothers. He doesn't pay any attention to me and I quickly get on his tail and give him a good burst from my guns. Once again, I thought I heard a scream and he turns over and he also spins into the ground.

I look around and see two more Huns attacking one of my brothers and hurry over to help. It's the same situation as before, they are so intent on killing my brother that they don't notice me. Just like before I line up on that cat and I give him a good burst just like the other cats before and just like before, there was that scream. Now I know my mind is slipping because there is no way I could hear them cats scream. Anyway, he plunges to Earth just like the cats before him. Couldn't get a picture of the last one because another flight of Huns chose that moment to dive and attack us. We return back to our pad where my kills were confirmed and The Man promotes me to Lieutenant. I ask the other fellows if they had heard those Huns screaming, they shake their heads no, and that right there is some bad mojo.

We've been told to expect enemy planes along our front lines so we're off to give them a bloody nose if they venture close. I'm a bit miffed that everyone has a shiny new Camel to fly while I still have my trusted, but outdated Pup.

We climb steadily through the clouds. I'm slowing everyone down and A flight pulls ahead of us.

After a while I spot dots on the horizon and head off to investigate. Getting closer I realise that they're DFW two seaters.

There's four of them and six of us along with A flight who should be in the vicinity. I open up on the nearest enemy and get a few hits when I appear to be bracketed by a number of enemy guns. I veer off to the side while the plane takes more hits. The enemy gunners appear to be concentrating on me and forget about the rest of my flight. It's a fatal mistake as one by one they're knocked out of the sky.

I look around and see three machines spinning down. I reform the flight and continue the patrol. Our allocated time is up and so we head back to our airfield.

We land safely and B flight put 3 claims in. I'm very proud of the boys. My plane is going to take two days to fix. Hopefully they'll just give me a Camel.

Mission 9, 14 November 1917 - Escort Recce

We flew up on a routine escort mission - routine except I was the only flight member still flying a decrepit Pup! I had difficulty keeping up with the others, and just when I'd finally rejoined the formation after the long climb as we reached the front, the rest of them swooped down on some enemy scouts far below! I dove after them, mindful of the more extreme limitations of my craft, and managed to put some good shots into one of the Huns, but I neglected my back for just a moment too long and his buddy put a slew of bullets into my old crate. I disengaged from the battle and decided that since my Pup was emitting some of the most terrifying noises I've ever heard, it was best set 'er down as quick as possible so I spotted a nice gentle section of road and landed nice and easy. When I got back to the airfield, the rest of the boys were halfway through their celebration, it seems between them they claimed five aerial victories! I need a new plane...

Rick, I believe it's because my wingman won't leave my side. I don't remember ever having a wingman stick to me like this one does.

Hmm...
Mission 9:
We spotted a Group of 5 Pfalzes above us. 2 of them were a bit eager and attacked - the others ran away.
...two Pfalzes... we had a Flight of 8 Planes. You can already figure out, how that ended.
I even pursued one of them, but I let go of him very soon, because it was far too dangerous to permanently keep an Eye on all the other Pups buzzing around us.
My Teammates are very skilled, but they seem to feel the Need to show that to everyone... they are doing wild Stunts all the Time and don't care who or what is in their Flight Path...
So I watched them do their Thing, spun a few Rounds after that and went home.

I'll cut a Video of that - there is at least some Action in it charge

...like the Guy in the WOFF-Audio-Files said: "First Thing you do (in Air Combat) is: Avoid a Collision."

We ran into some Albatri up high. Just when we were winning they checked out by diving into the clouds below. We regrouped and went home.
