Mission 6

We get tasked to take down the Observation Balloon at Abschmitt. We form up and begin our journey and all goes well until I spot what appears to be a lone albatross below us. I can't resist and break formation to wheel about and dive down upon him. I open fire and get some hits on him but he's bloody fast and soon outstrips the reach of my guns. The problem is, looking up I see that it isn't just him. There's a whole flight of them now perched right above me. Bloody wonderful.

It's not long before some other elements of my flight engage them and I mix it up with them as well. They must have been whelps because we scared them all off pretty quick. Just a few rounds in each and they'd turn and run. Lucky for them their Albs are faster than our trusty little Pups and before long, they were all out of range with no kills to show for all our efforts.

We reform up and head back to our original objective, the observation balloon. During the descent, I lose track of the target and misjudge my airspeed. I can hear my wings creaking but I'm wary of pulling up too fast. Sure enough, not a few moments after I finally relocate the observation balloon my wings get torn up from the stress! My crate is a wreck. Figuring I'll probably get bounced on the way back anyways and not be able to defend myself, I might as well complete the mission. I wheel about and retarget the balloon from roughly the same altitude...but my rockets won't fire! Bloody electrical short! I have to do it the old fashioned way. Machine gun bullets it is. Dodging enemy ground fire I make multiple passes and am able to get the balloon to catch fire. Soon after, she explodes and the mission was completed. Now I was flying for myself.

Given the condition of my wings, I'm not sure how long they will keep me aloft, so I don't bother forming up with the rest of the squadron but instead make a beeline for home. Wouldn't you know it, after fiddling with the switch over no mans land, the bloody rockets fire then. Unreliable piece of weaponry there! And though I was certain some Alb was going to come along and make short work of me, no such fellow appeared and I landed back at base and went straight away to the officers mess for a stiff drink.

The kicker of it all? Some damn fool awards me a medal! How I survived my own stupidity was beyond me but if they are going to keep rewarding fools for making stupid mistakes, I don't have much hope of us winning the war. They are rewarding the wrong behavior, but I guess they don't care if it's bravery or dumb luck up there...as long as the job gets done. I just smiled and accepted the award. At least mum and dad will be proud.

I actually tried that on a 2-seater once. It only damaged it and I got caught in the blast as well.

Balloon busting @ FB7155
B-flight of 5 craft lead by McLeod. A-flight of 4 planes directly assisting.
Finally rain stopped and I get to use the rockets again. This time I have to remember to fire them, but why is the rest of the flight equipped with bombs?

We reached the balloon without opposition. The entire flight dropped their bombs from high altitude with foreseeable results, while I dove down and finally used the rockets. The balloon exploded and we all went home without wasting any more time than necessary.

The balloon was credited to McLeod (?!?) and I finally get to fly the Camel. Time to paint new gorilla. All in all, it was a quiet day.

Line Patrol

It was raining cats and dogs when we took off to patrol the front, but that didn't keep us from taking care of business. We arrived at our patrol area and began to fly back and forth just waiting for some low down Hun to show his rotten face. Well, it didn't take long before we spotted three Huns way up above us in the clouds. I gave the signal and we began to climb to get up at those cats, wasn't long before we were swirling around each other like a couple of dancers. The Pfalz the Huns like to fly is faster than our Pups, but it's not nearly as maneuverable and that's the way I like it. Before I knew it, I was filling that Hun with lead until he burst into flames, scratch one evil Hun sucker.

Weeks recap: Three missions down. Made contact with the enemy on the first. Our flight became separated in an engagement with some Albatros scouts, and then on the way home I was attacked by several Pfalz aircraft. Managed to scare two off and shoot the other down, but no confirmation. Did not meet the enemy on mission two. Engaged in a dogfight with 4 x Albatros on mission 3, no kills.

Lt. Billy Bob Crawley returned to camp from his seventh mission to something very unexpected and unappreciated:

I pity the next Hun that William happens upon.

After the first seven sorties Billy Bob has chalked up ten victories, a medal, and a promotion, not to mention several trips to Paris. And best of all, he came back from his most recent leave to find he had a shiny new Camel waiting for him. He can't wait to take it for a turn!

Quick Question Please : When injured and spend 13 days in the hospital do we also advance for all of the other reasons?

I got two more kills on mission #7 making me an ACE so the math should be correct before flying # 8 tomorrow.

I will never attack another bomber! I came from underneath at 60 yards and the gunner had to shoot through the floor
to get me.

So far 32 points for the old gezzer.

Sheriff Justice (GHOST)
Mission 9: November 15, 1917

Just letting you nice ladies know that I'm still plinking away, at least in ghost mode.

Done got myself a bit of what we in southern England like to call payback as well. Me and the men were flying over Filescamp when we saw some what I thought were two-seaters running schnapps over the line, so we went up to tell them not to mess up my nice airspace with that kind of business.

Fortunately one of them broke away and I thought to get myself an arrest, see. Then it turned out they weren't two-seaters, but more of those Pfalz boys that shot me up last month. Well, I gulped down my Dr. Pepper (frosty at 8,000 feet) and we chased them across the sky.

One of them got behind me and hit a few times, but my boys chased him off. I found myself behind a sky blue Pfalz and told him to pull over with my machine gun. Well, he got my message but instead of landing he just dove away out of sight. By the time I spun around he was gone.

Let me tell you, no one makes Buford T. Justice look like a possum's pecker! The PBI were firing at something low and to the left, and there he was trying to sneak off to no man's land. I chased him. Once he heard my siren going he tried to steer this way and that, but this time I stayed with him and fired whenever he happened to cross in front of me. Tearing fabric, cracking wood, and finally the sumbitch went down right outside Mt. St. Eloi. Almost planted himself on some poor house.

Well I took him in. They can take the Justice out of the challenge, but they can't take the challenge out of...

...damn moose twits.

OK.....GAW1 reporting for duty! I'm way behind the rest of you so I'll try and catch up....or not. Nietzsche made me a great devil skin (thank you)..but I couldn't make it display properly, my fault I'm sure (will send pic). Louvert kindly donated a skin w/ my old bad eel on it...very nice. Thank you both!!! Love this place!

gaw, if you mean it won't show up in game, I have had this problem a lot. It seems to have something to do with when and how WOFF pulls up the skins list. Here's something to try:

1. Go into the QC screen, load the plane and the skin, run a free flight mission. If it works, you're good.

2. If it doesn't, exit to the main screen of WOFF, alt-tab out, go to the skins folder, rename the skin by sticking a 1 or an A or something at the end, so from this: "Off_Alb_DIII_ace_t_Jasta 11 1917_Otto_Brauneck" to this: "Off_Alb_DIII_ace_t_Jasta 11 1917_Otto_Brauneck A" and then go back into QC and try it again. This will often work.

3. If that doesn't work, exit to the main screen, alt-tab out, change the name again as above, go back into WOFF, Pick a pilot from the opposite side of the war (so if you are trying to load a British skin, pick a German pilot), run a QC with him, go back to your original pilot and try loading that skin up again.

All you have to do is trick the program into showing it once and you are good... some combination of the above will hopefully work for you...

Mission 6, 4 November 1917 - Intercept

No sign of the enemy, and barely a cloud in the sky. We patrol over no man's land for half an hour before giving up and returning home, guess they slipped by. It's such glorious flying weather that i hold back for a bit and practice some loops and hammerhead stalls over the airfield while the rest of the chaps land.

Mission 7, 7 November 1917 - Airfield Attack

My hands are still shaking! I thought today would be the end of the war for me for sure! I was appointed to lead a flight of four to attack the enemy airfield at Habourdin, where a number of their bombers are based. We made good time, flying rather low because of the cloud cover so we could be sure to find our target. When we arrived, I took a couple strafing runs but the ground fire was quite intense. Suddenly I heard a loud thud right behind my head - an archie shell burst much closer than normal! When i reached my hand back behind my head, it came back red with blood - I didn't feel much though with my heart pounding so hard. Suddenly I also spotted aircraft above me - bombers returning to base! I tried to shoot at one of them, but messed up my approach and the gunner put a few more bullets through my poor Pup. I was going to come around for another pass, but suddenly fuel pressure began dropping and my engine rpms dropped. My heart sank as i realized i was going down behind enemy lines, so I pointed my aircraft back towards friendly territory and glided as far as I could. When my plane touched down I looked around in panic, assuming the Huns would be here to drag me off to prison (or shoot me - I had just been strafing their airfield) any moment, and sure enough a small group of men came and hurried up towards me, but imagine my surprise to hear jolly old English! It seems that some of our boys here were more advanced than I had thought, and they helped me back to the rear where i was able to get a ride on a truck from Bethune back to our field at Filescamp. God Bless the Infantry!

(I was quite surprised when the post mission screen said I landed behind friendly lines... I figured the gig was up for Mags... but his luck holds!)

@ gaw1: Cool :-) Now you've got both the Pup & the Camel covered (my skin was just for the Camel, I somehow forgot to tell you that -sorry)

Okay, 8th Mission for "the Bandit":
Today, we only had one Cloud. It was 13k feet tall, and extended to the Horizon.
We even managed to find the three REs, whom we had to escort. Luckily, Elmer was in Lead and somehow spotted them. No Idea, where they were flying to or how they navigated, but we didn't bother. Orders were "Follow 'em", so, who cares...
Everyone speaks of the great Air-War, but from personal Experience, I doubt that the Kaiser has more than 3 Planes in this Region. On my first Day with the "Black Sheep", we stumbled upon a Bunch of Dreideckers, but we never saw them, since. I guess, these 2 Albs we encountered a few Days ago, weren't from here, either.
If Times continue being peaceful like this, I should have no Problems continuing my Moonshine-Business over here, although I've already seen Sherrif Justice investigatin' ...

Maybe I'll cut a short Video (first Time I used Bandicam in the Campaign). There are some nice Clouds and Sun-Glare-Effects...

@Rick:
The two Days per Month Advance, are they per Calendar, or do you have to be in the Air for a Month?
