I'll be seeing it Sunday night. I'll be sure to post a spoiler-free review.

I know movie tickets prices are high nowadays but this is one movie I would want to see on the big screen.

XKCD explains the movie best (as is often the case):

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more inexplicable.
There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

I read the book. The technical details are written with a lot of wit and humor. Its a very easy read. I really enjoyed it.

I see Damon pulling off the Castaway McGuyver role pretty well.

I typically avoid Matt Damon films but this film I may make an exception for.

Movies for me are never about the prices, it's all about the sitters.

Wait.

Wasn't Chastain in Interstellar.

So is this movie and Interstellar related?

I read the book about 6 months ago with no idea that a big budget Hollywood film was in production.

I really enjoyed the book, I'm quite picky about my realistic SF but it really pushed my buttons. Its not just for tech geeks there is a lot of humour in there and Weir writes the personal story of the Hermes crew and Watney very well without resorting over sentimentality. The lack of metaphysical bollocks is also a breath of fresh air after Interstellar...

I'll probably go to see this on the big screen next week and I hardly ever go to the cinema.

No. Damon and Chastain being in both films is most likely a coincidence or maybe Ridley Scott and Chris Nolan really like both of those actors.

I just saw it. It was good.

I have no idea why they bothered with 3D though. Its just not spectacular, visually speaking.

This is not your typical Hollywood "Mars" movie... this is more a "by thr numbers" rescue/recovery story, not for "roller coaster movie" fans. This is meant more for us aerospace fans. More for those who know what NASA stands for, its history, and know a bit about actual real world spaceships. Meaning its meant for people who visit SimHQ, more than people who visit Gawker and Facebook.

This doesn't need to be seen on the big screen, well don't watch it on a smartphone either, but anyway.

Thing is, there was not much surprises, it was pretty straightforward. I kinda suspect I might enjoy the book more than the movie.

The acting was good, as was the dialogue. It was well made, but I can't say I was blown away either.

By comparison, and this isn't exactly fair, but I was much more "moved" by Interstellar, for many reasons, even if the "love conquers all" physics plotline left me saying "Really?! REALLY?!?!". But... it was visually stunning... the story had twists and turns, unexpected events, it really swung for the fences.

It kept me on the edge of my seat, unlike "The Martian".

But The Martian is good and worth seeing, especially for this crowd.

Saw it yesterday, really liked it! Like Rick says, not as deep as Interstellar, much more straightforward, but it was well made, well cast, and with a good balance of drama, humour and excitement.

Oh, and they even managed to sneak in a huge LOTR reference with Sean Bean biggrin

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

If it's the one I'm thinking of, that was most definitely in the book too, which makes it all the more hilarious that Sean Bean was cast in the role that he was.

I'm going to see it hopefully tonight- I'll be interested to see how well they can translate some of the more technical/ nerdy/ engineer-y parts from the book.

I'm not sure why people think Chastain is beautiful. She looks like skeletor to me.

I loved the movie.

3D was not spectacular, but then I don't want it to be. I just don't want it to get in the way of the story or cinematics. Or anything, really. It happened to be a nice addition to the movie (which I had the option of skipping). Fortunately it was done nicely.

I found areas to criticize. The miniature models of vehicles on Mars looked like miniatures. Nevertheless, the overall effect of the story telling was balanced out for me so that I continued to suspend my disbelief. smile

Saw it tonight and loved it. Very true to the book for the most part, what was changed was mostly for the better.

Just got back from seeing this and I thought it was fantastic. This film has a very similar vibe to that of "Apollo 13" so if you liked that movie you should like this one as well. I also didn't think Kristen Wiig could pull of a dramatic role but she did.

My only nitpick with the film was the overly-idealized US/China relationship.
