Well, maybe, but far more likely they just don't care. Cheating on emissions testing is really not the purview of the CIA or NSA.

No doubt U.S. intelligence knew about this years ago and sat on the info until they knew Volkswagen would be hurt by the size of the recall, well played if that's the case. Say what ?

Intel agencies are used to provide an economic advantage after all.
Other than maybe a disgruntled VW employee, who could have tipped off the EPA given such a subtle software measure?
http://www.economist.com/news/briefing/2...re-industry-andFrom the article, "The scandal broke on September 18th, when Americas Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revealed that several diesel-engined VWs and Audis had software which switched NOx-controlling technology on only when faced with the highly predictable sort of demands seen under test conditions." So let's just pretend for now that the CIA/NSA/whatever was colluding with the EPA for the specific purpose of bringing down VW. Do you realize how many people would have to be involved in this consipiracy in order to pull this off? There is no way that could be kept totally under wraps. Nah, what happened here instead is that the EPA was taking its time to gather enough evidence before they made the announcement.

The first inklings came from an independent lab in 2012: http://www.npr.org/2015/09/24/443053672/...agens-big-cheatBut of course being scientists, they wanted to rigorously test the data, and as Panzer suggests, makes sure all the ducks were in a row before going public with the findings. Which is the responsible thing to do, given the magnitude of the scandal. As for other car companies cheating in the same way, I strongly doubt it- after all, no other auto makers have been making the same claims as VW when it comes to their diesel technology.

There is nothing the Germans (or any other country) can do wrong that can't ultimately blamed on the USA in general and the NSA in particular.

Yeah, you'd think the NSA could've warned Gaius Julius against Brutus, but noooooo, the NSAgenda wanted Octavius on the throne at any cost!
There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

Anyone else see the irony in this video that Panzers used petrol and the problem is with diesel?

I regularly hear a radio station, which every morning has some funny or sarcastic fake news a few minutes after the real ones. A few days ago they stated, that after the scandal, the number off sells of VWs in the US has gone UP. They said, the common US citizen thought, that these small, fuel-efficient, low-emission cars were only for ecologist hippies from the west-coast. Now when they found out, that VWs are really stinky diesels, they are accepted as real cars......

Unfortunately, there is some truth to that characterization. There is definitely a sizable proportion of the population that wants to behave in a contrary manner to whatever "common wisdom" may be, if for no reason other than bucking the trend. If there's a shred of evidence to back up their stance, they hold it all the more fiercely.
