Ok guys, looks like I may get a key to join up in the Alpha/Beta. (yeah I know what I said about alpha and betas but I have been following this for a long time)

Anyway, Who is still playing and who is aligned with what nationality and who wants to sink me?

Ok ok, don't fall over each other in a rush to grapeshot me in the face.

So give it up. Let me know whats happening and give me the lowdown.

I got the email this morning saying they will let me in, so waiting for store/purchase info email. Not sure if I want to be neutral though thinking about aligning with a nation for some battles. All part of the fun.

There is a host of videos I have been watching before deciding to take the plunge.

Lots of Youtube videos from a guy called RamJB He has a channel and has done a lot of how to videos in order to understand the finer points of battle and sailing.

Also check out Deathstimulator on youtube as he has a host of videos showing his progress before the wipe. His channel has gone silent for the last 3 or so weeks but lots of stuff on it.

There has recently been a wipe of all accounts and an update incorporated bringing in a crafting mechanic. So we will have to see how that all pans out.

But looking forward to getting in game.

If you're sole goal playing the game is to get the next biggest ship, you'll probably feel it is somewhat grindy (less than some games, but I don't really do the MMO thing), especially seeing as this is an alpha with low player population and no "realm v. realm" content (i.e. other reasons to fight than getting a bigger ship).

You will especially feel this way if you go neutral, because they can't attack anyone but pirates (and AI smugglers), and can't be attacked by anyone but pirates. Don't go neutral. Neutrals make Baby Nelson cry.

Okely dokely. I received my key and the game is downloaded. Thinking I will side British for time zone capability. Now need to get some private time in to salt my bones.

Too bad your neutral Asid, would be good to join up for some cannon fun. Maybe we could engage in trade if possible

Raaaaaaaarrrggghhh.

Well I am enjoying the game. Have my head around the navigation, and have been in a number of battles and tried my hand at capturing ships.... Mmmm ships. not a bad little money earner

Combat I have a fairly good grasp at, but I am still in the yacht/cutter and a whole new sailing mechanic will arise when I upgrade to the square riggers.

But combat is really good fun. (still looking for Asid - to trade with obviously.......)

price wise I am getting up to something that may get me a snow in a day or two.... but I need more XP to crew it effectively.

Time to Capture liberate some more vessels.

Not to fussed on having the biggest bestest ship but it is nice to be able to get out of he early (learning) tiers semi fast and into something a bit decent smile Will definitely keep an eye on it and probably pick it up once they get a bit more content.

I have been playing 2 days now and I definitely don't see a massive grind, maybe that will come later.

But saying that, only 2days in and I already have the money to buy a snow.

Its not the money side of things that's too grindy. Its the rankings for crew. Though I can buy a snow (next tier ship) you really need the ranking to crew it properly. If you are low on crew, performance of tasks taken on the ship takes longer and could put you at risk or disadvantage, even if your ship is a class higher.

From what I have seen of crafting, that may be grindy. But some have said that is due to a lack of merchant sailors. Not really dabbled in that myself, I am a kinda "stick a cannon in your face" type 'o guy

If you can find a grey Marines module (1000 gold), you can boost your crew total 15%. Helps with crewing bigger ships at lower ranks.

ahh good advice. Thanks.

Maybe I should have bought something smaller than a snow. Anyway it hiding in port for me to pick up when I want it.

Not too far from my next ranking. If I get a good night in, or get bolder on the targets I choose, I may grab the snow and take her out. But I will want some practice with a propper square rigger to get the sailing down.

Ok, well after a good day yesterday I have decided to collect my Snow and transport it back to home base. I have gained a lot of confidence fighting in the Yacht and I like the nimbleness and speed of the little fellow.

I have been capturing a lot of ships to pilfer their weaponry ready for the snow and in a pretty epic fight that took around 40ish minutes I managed to capture a trader snow for if I want to dabble in trading.

In the midst of all this I have ranked up my captain and he can now fill the snow with full compliment.

However, the Yacht (only ship I am used to) is not a true square rigger. I do realise this and anticipate a learning curve to fighting in the square rigged snow.

Well, a learning curve it was. I was rehearsed in the basics of manual sail trim but I wasn't prepared for how much of a necessity it was. You really need to manhandle the sails on square riggers or you will be at a disadvantage in no time with the enemy.

But the snow and I have gelled and she is now battle tested. I am glad I jumped to a larger ship that has 360 degree weaponry to scare those pesky little ships that like to nip at my hind quarters.

Really enjoying the game. The battles require skill and tactics and is at a pace that is just right. I have grown to accept that the open world is a good thing the way they have developed the game. the size of the maps are very large requiring some skill and discipline in long journeys and the time compression is a necessity so as to avoid you spending 2 weeks at the computer just to get from A to B.

I like how the game is progressing and the only other early access game I felt this good about was kerbal space programme and that turned out to be such a fantastic game. Fingers crossed for this one.

There was perhaps a little too much confidence in my abilities in the snow....... oops. I think I got a little cocky.

2 snows lay at the bottom of the sea. I must use a little more restraint in my battles!

Glad you're enjoying the game. And yeah, manual control of the fore and aft sails is an absolute must in the fully-rigged ships.

yep

Well I have over 100k in the bank and I am on the look out for a fine quality surprise. Going to run it undercrewed until I find some helpful souls with a deathwish that want to crew with me.

Was contemplating a Cerberus, found a few of those but I am after the larger calibre weapons. I can afford a nice frigate, but it will be too undercrewed and the repair kits costs a pretty penny. That will be the next upgrade.

Well if you see some around, let me know where they are.....(surprise that is)

Just don't get a ship you can't crew. For Surprise to Trincomalee Master&Commander is pretty much a must while you can crew a Cerberus as Lieutenant.
