Some fascinating pics here. I had no idea that the predecessor to what lead to the modern "vending machine" originated in Germany,

I've never seen an automat outside of the film Dark City.

I doubt it; as I understood the article, staff would reload the compartments only once an item was gone. I do not think that it would have been difficult to design theft preventing procedures or systems.

It is rather interesting that the Automat was replaced by the fast food restaurant, reversing the general trend to more impersonal retail experiences. Also interesting to note were the pictures of German women buying nylons (and by the look one of the machines, panties) from such devices. Of course, as so often happens, the Japanese went and 'improved' that idea, as you all no doubt know.

It's cool how ornate that coffee machine was made.

Fascinating; thanks for posting.
I don't think they ever really caught on in Britain (apart from the smaller cigarette, gum and chocolate bar dispenser type)
Only saw one on a London station selling books that you wouldn't have the nerve to ask for in a book shop.
I believe there were some in Oxford Street for a short while, but we had Joe Lyons and the Nippys. Much more civilised!

Just what came to mind for me too. LOL
Not a bad idea, better than a buffet table with everything out in the open. PO Boxes for food with the cook keeping it filled from the other side.

The original Star Trek had one on the Enterprise except the doors were opaque. They updated it to replicators for TNG, but in TOS it was really a glorified automat.

Come to think of it, they had that on the NX-01 too, didn't they? Seems like I remember Trip finding pecan pie in there once.

I recall them from the 70ies to the 80ies.

The food automats often were on railway stations and we had one in school for sweets. Flower shops often had them in the door, so when the shop was closed you still could buy some flowers.

When I made basic training in the GAF, we had an beer automat in the basement.

One of the things that always marked Germany out as a civilised nation was the ability to purchase beer from a vending machine. I don't think I've seen that anywhere else in the world.

We had a "soda" machine at our Fraternity house that we kept stocked with beer back in the 80's
A .50 cent cold beer after a day of classes was very nice cheers

A couple of us Army Brats would get cases of brew from the Class Six on Post to stock it with.

edit:

once word got out and regular donks would show up to grab a cold one it did not last long frown but I agree with U-96 that is was very "civilized" way to procure a cold one while it lasted smile

I remember them on train platforms mostly, and reasonably priced. The fact that you trust your citizens to behave sensibly when purchasing alcohol is a very alien culture from the UK! biggrin

I've always thought the same about the cigarette vending machines in the US back in the 70's and 80's. I'm sure lots of purchasers under the age of 18 took advantage of that. biggrin

There were no age restrictions for smoking back then, so I don't know why they'd need to...

I turned 18 in 1989, and yes in the 80's we did in fact sometimes resort to cigarette vending machines due to age restrictions - but pretty rarely. Back then we'd buy smokes pretty much everywhere even at age 15 and it was rare to get carded. Some places were even known to sell us alcohol. I doubt all this happens nearly as much today.

Back on the topic though - I bet those old time "vending machines" actually had decent food in them!
