I had the original on CD but it used to crash all the time so I gave up. Last night I picked up the Steam version with the US DLC and it seems very stable and lots of fun. I've only tried being vehicle crew so far but I'm loving it. My grandfather was a battery commander for StuGIII's so obviously that's seeing some use.

Two questions please - if I am unbuttoned and not using binoculars, how do I designate a target for the gunner? Also, even if I tell him to change to MG and designate a soldier, he tends not to fire. Am I doing something wrong there?

Ability of gunner to effectively engage targets depends quite a bit on his skill, AFAIR.

Here's a few things you can try:

CTRL+F to change turret main weapon to MG
hold right mouse button to designate/detect ennemies
ctrl+left click to confirm you want him to fire

Test it with the editor, one med tank and an ennemy squad in the vicinity (takes about 10 cliks, 30 secs, you can play the mission directly from the editor). On my install it seems to work, I don't know how to direct my gunner specifically on an infantry target, but I hold right mouse button over all ennemies and he seems to kill them in a sequence he chooses by himself. We may have missed one or two, but they were no threat in a matter of seconds.

Thank you - it may have been the CTRL+click I was missing. Didn't know about that one. I'm having a blast with it, I'd forgotten how much fun it was. Pity the StuGIIIG's top machine gun is missing though - makes it harder to use to support infantry. I like the new Sherman, hadn't seen that before. I also like the Command and Control module where you don't have to give orders to stacks of troops but can command platoons & sections much more easily.

There has been even more progress in Arma3, I hope there's be an IronFront official port sometime, current mod port doesn't work well. I know modders are on it but I'm afraid it's a big bite.

Let me help you with that. Download this...

...and put it with the rest of your missions that you create, wherever you happen to save them. Then, next time you make a mission, use the 'merge' function and merge this mission onto what you are creating.

If you press 0 - 8 while playing, a menu system will pop up that will hopefully improve the HC game for you. The first option is the QUICK COMMANDS menu. This one is to be used when in HC mode. Select one or more units to command, then select the command on the menu. The most useful are the HALT and PROCEED commands. Using these, you can make elaborate plans without having the various squads moving as soon as an order is given...much better for making coordinated attacks. The SQUAD LEADER menu basically gives you the chance to switch to any squad member in your current squad, with a few other functions. Finally, the COMMUNICATIONS menu lets you shut everyone up!

Here is a more complex scenario with more advanced menus. Feel free to load it up and play around with it. It is not complete, but it is certainly playable.

Glad you enjoying the game again!

I think it is the best WW2 tank game to date for multiplayer use and with it moving over to Arma3, will only get better.
