I'm sure whomever came up with that town name was most likely looking for a good laugh. smile

I reckon the correct pronunciation of Llanfair would give most people a bit of trouble.

With the influx of Muslim refugees in Europe, I bet there will be a lot of towns to be renamed to words we cannot pronounce.

- I know those voices in my head are not real, but man they have some good ideas.

- I never killed anyone, but I have read a large number of obituaries with great satisfaction.

- If I cannot make it to your funeral, I will certainly send a message indicating my approval.

I personally think all cities and towns in Europe should go back to their Roman names.

Camulondonum, Londinium and Corinium just sound cool!

My mom was from Wales, bet she would have got a kick out of this clip. She once sent me a post card of the train depot at Llanfair, the name of the town on the sign above the depot was as long as the card. Looks like bomber pilots could have flown from England to Berlin along that name on the map.

Sounds like someone named the village using a METAR transcription method! biggrin

According to wiki,

The long form of the name was invented for promotional purposes in the 1860s; with 58 characters it is the longest place name in Europe and the second longest official one-word place name in the world.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

It was inspired by the advent of railway stations
with place name signs.

driving down from Manchester to Bristol using the more scenic 'b' roads, it's easy to tell when you have strayed across the Welsh border because all the vowels disappear from all the signage biggrin

My roommate just saw this story on the news and exclaimed "that's Stupid why would you name something with a word you can't pronounce" and me understanding that this is in Wales, thought aloud well it's Welsh and probably was an obscure little Village the King or somebody important passed through in Ye Olden Times so they named it "ThePlaceWheretheKingStoppedandPissedontheRoadside" or something equally ridiculous sounding in their native tongue and that's closer than I think anyone could just take a stab at and it was pretty close. I was surprised it was an attempt to get name recognition over 150 years ago and not something more ancient.

Can you imagine a Welsh version of the "Wheel of Fortune" TV show?

English Closed Captioning:
"Pat, I'd like to buy a vow.... Oh, never mind!" wink
