Hi Rick and all !

Unfortunately, due to unexpected RL commitments which will reduce my flying time in the coming weeks ( not talking about the upcoming Rugby World Cup ... ) I will have to call it off for this one.

I will nevertheless enjoy as usual reading your high deeds with my morning coffee. Viel Spass am Engländer Jagd !

Robert and Nietzsche, great to see some more videos pop up! Nietzsche- glad to see I am not the only person wondering where the hell all my bullets were going. Those. Planes. Did. Not. Want. To. Go. Down! Also, checking your six while continuing to pummel you foe in front of you with machine gun fire? Priceless!!

Corsaire, good luck with real life, pop in when you can!

Balloon busting at FB821
Schwarm Zwei - 6 planes led by von Tutschek
Schwarm Eins - 4 planes assigned to top cover
One of the planes returned home before reaching cruising altitude. Someone got the balloon before Otto was able to get close enough with his old and slow DII. As it turned out later it was Reinhold Jorke by ploughing his mount straight into the balloon and destroying the plane in the process. Rest of the flight returned home unopposed.

From out of my arse take the camshaft,
And assemble the engine again."

* 5 May 1917 @ 05h00 Patrol our lines between Riencourt and Marcoing

Schock lead our kette of 4, with Jorke, Hochstetter and myself. Kette eins was to provide protecting cover with Kallweil leading and Stroh, Laemmermann, Henkershafe and Aldenhoff accompanying him. Our flight to the lines was quiet until Schock banked left to head for Reincourt on the first leg. I then spotted two specs coming in our direction. I did not follow Schock and continued on to investigate the two specs which soon disappeared in the clouds. I then banked left and seeing kette eins approaching decided to swing in behind them and follow. I glanced back towards my kette zwei and noticed what I suspected were those two specs closely following my kette. I swung hard to give chase and soon caught up with them over Reincourt. At this point Schock and company were engaging them. I picked out one and gave chase and after some difficult effort managed to down one over the field. The other must have beat a hasty retreat as there was no sign of him. Schock, Jorke and Hochstetter were in a landing pattern so I joined in at the tail end. As we approached the field I saw a SPAD VII dive on schock who was just landing. I scanned the skies and saw 4 more coming down on us. Schock, Jorke and Hochstetter managed to land and as I was coming in I took a hit to my port wing as a SPAD zipped past me. I managed to set down, taxi off the runway and get clear. I watched as the SPADs made a hasty retreat. We all piled into the RO’s office where upon I made a claim for one SPAD VII which Schock confirmed he saw go down. No other claims were laid. Stroh, Laemmermann and Aldenhoff were missing and we could only hope they were safe somewhere. Henkershafen had been seen to force land but was alright.

Nice work, Robert! Those SPADs can be brutal. If they don't like it, they can take their balls and go home! *tee hee*
I have to say that even knowing how it ended, I was sure you were dead when that SPAD pulled up right in front of you! That was too close! duck

Cristel Pallitz. Mission 4, May 4th 1917.

Balloon Defense.

Our flight of five took off early, just after 5am. Traveled south to protect one of our gas bags just north of St Quentin. Slow old boat, my DII. I barely kept up. We lost two en route, engine failure I suppose. Arrived to find a pack of pups terrorizing our balloon!! I tried to stay above them, looking for a chance to swoop in on one's tail. All of a sudden I was in the thick of it. got off a few bursts, but couldn't really tell if I hit anything. Something hit me, though, and I bailed, going into a spin. Somehow I managed to land at Fontaine-Uterte field, engine dead but still in one piece!!

Four days in hospital, and I think that puts me at precisely zero points. At least the mechanics approve of my new paint job.

Fullofit, That must have been quite a surprise to see Jorke, an HA, do that, but then, HA's have 9 lives! biggrin

Harry, just surviving may be all you need and there is still time to collect points as there is a long way to go.

Rick, thanks for the pat on the back and yes, I stopped breathing for a moment when that SPAD came in.

Escort

My first day back from hospital and we're escorting our friends from Ss-11 over the lines.

We pick up the two seaters and head for the lines. After 15 minutes I notice planes in front of us, high and to our right. As I'm watching these an enemy Nieuport comes screaming down from immediately above us and towards our two seaters. I never even noticed this enemy. von Tutschek and I immediately set off after this gentleman.

von Tutschek closes and the Nieuport turns and comes head on at me. I hold down the trigger and close my eyes for the inevitable. Our two planes touch slightly and my rudder loses some of it's tightness. The enemy keeps spinning on down and crashes.

My planes is still responding but doesn't roll as quickly as it should. Never mind, I head back to our two seaters to give them and possibly me some protection.

As I'm heading Westward another enemy plane comes diving down on me. It's Sopwith two seater. It's one of the planes I noticed earlier.

I'm trying to turn as best I can but my damaged Albatros can't keep up with the Sopwith in the turns. Next thing, there's a flash of black past my cockpit. It's von Tutschek!

He screams down like a demon and latches on to the enemy.

He gets in a number of hits and the enemy makes for home. We both follow the Sopwith and I decide to stay clear of von Tutschek, this is his victory. Off to one side to prevent the enemy from turning I have a ringside seat as I watch him send the enemy down in a spin to crash near our front lines.

I wave my appreciation and decide it's time to head home. I realise you have to have a death wish to fight in a plane that isn't 100% fighting fit!

I land too fast and nearly smash into the fences at the end of the airfield. They really need to get rid of those.

I wait for the rest of the flight to land. They all make it back and 6 claims are put in. von Tutschek tells me about another Nieuport he has claimed. That's 2 for him.

I put my arm around his shoulder and walk back to the mess. "I owe you a drink", I say.

He agrees.

Great story, Smosh! Please be very careful on those approaches, we need your guns in the air! Are you noticing how "wind sensitive" the DIII is compared to the DII?

Absolutely. The Albatros is taking some getting used to I have to say.

I need to remember Robert_Wiggins' advice and stay above the action where possible.

I had to reinstall WOFF and can't get Robert's backup program to restore flyable pilots.
May I restart?

Patrol Friendly Lines

We take off into a beautiful May sky.

After patrolling for around 15 minutes I notice a large number of machines in the sky ahead of us.

As we get closer it looks like enemy two seaters being escorted. Suddenly 3 aircraft detach themselves from the horde and come over above us.

SPADS!

I get into a turning fight with one who puts a few holes in my machine. I eventually manage to close up on him and fire a few rounds back. He goes into a spin and doesn't recover.

Having lost the rest of my flight I head home being shadowed by another SPAD above me. I lead him through our observations balloons and close to my home airfield where he loses interest and heads home.

I land safely. We learn that Osterkamp has been killed. It's a sad day in the mess. I put in for 1 kill.

I am fine with this, if it affects winner determination we'll worry about it then!

So Rick, that's what it was. I was lining up behind a Fee last night and my DIII was bouncing up and down so much I never could finish him off. I was wondering what was causing it.

I think so... I have *complained* duck for some time about how much the wind buffets the Nieuport series of planes starting with the 11. I have not flown the DIII since wind was introduced, but it was the same way in my Quick Combat flights yesterday. Maybe it has something to do with how the sesquiplane lower wing design interacts with the flight engine, but most planes fly like you can't tell if the wind effects are even on, the Nieuport and DIII seem way overdone by comparison...

This has always been the case. It's nothing new. Can't say if it's realistic or not as I don't have the knowledge on that issue. It may just be that those effects are natural and all the other craft are too calm.
