New documentary on Netflix called Above and Beyond is about how American Jewish pilots from WW2 helped start the IAF. It's fascinating. Trailer here:

I always thought more than a wee bit ironic that their first airplanes were Czech built 109's.

The IDF used to operate with ex-Heer Mauser rifles rebarrelled from 7.92 to NATO 7.62mm. I used to own one, it had the Wehrmacht eagle and swastika over-stamped with Hebrew writing and the Star of David. Bloody accurate it was too.

The backbone of the IAF consisted of 25 Avia S-199s (purchased from Czechoslovakia, essentially Czechoslovak-built Messerschmitt Bf 109s) and 62 Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk IXEs (also purchased from Czechoslovakia).

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Looks like a good show , thanks for posting

Ironically the Arabs often flew Spitfires and there were cases of Spit vs. Spit combat.

pretty cool timing, I caught some IAF Eagles coming back from a Red Flag exercise last week.
The nose has Syrian Mig kills on them.

Curious the film show some Buchons in place of the proper Avia. Maybe there were no more Avias flying around anymore, but seeing a Buchon is strange as the Avia has a very distinctive shape.

-Sir in case of retreat, were we have to retreat??
