High over the Front
Alright got my ship repaired and headed out into the system to get some bounty.
See something marked "High Intensity Conflict Zone" and naturally head for it.
Arrive and find about 30 ships fighting away.
Half, showing green on my scanner, are labeled the "Federation Navy"
The other half show Orange on the scanner and are labeled as a "System Defense Force" and "Lawless" in red when scanned but all show no bounty on the KWS.

Help! Should I be on someone's side or is this not my fight?

I think in Conflict Zones, you must pick a side before jumping into the fight?

I have read this, but not being into combat, I've no idea how to actually do this.

Panel on the right, you need to go under "Choose Faction" and pick a side.

Hmmm.
Off the top it sounds like I don't have a dog in this fight.
Guess I am curious about the Federation Navy fighting the System Defense Force in a Federarion System.
Politics can be so complicated!

In CZs you earn Combat Vouchers that you can reddem under "contacts" on the Starport services Menu. But Like the others said you need to pick a side first. Right Panel, funcions tab - Choose faction.

Thank you gentlemen.
Flew 3 LY over to another system (LFT 926) for some honest bounty.
Guess when I go back I'll know what to do.

Yeah, you pick a side then it's open season. However, YOU must be prepared to be attacked as well. Not sure about the prizes though. Is it worth it? What exactly can you do with it?

Now, with the green ships, aren't they supposedly friendly or allied? If so, and you want to retain that status, the fighting on their side may be the way to go?

I know I've read that taking out pirates who are on the same faction as your friendly/allied may hurt your status with that faction.

Yes green is friendly due to all the bounty work done in other Federation systems I will presume.
Guess I would like to know why the Fed Navy is attacking the System Defense Forces from one of their own systems.
Possibly related to the ongoing Power Play stuff? Civil war?
Is there a way to find out?

Easiest way to find out is to dock at a station in the system, pull up the Statistics tab on the right side, and look at the "Factions" section. It'll give you a brief rundown on each faction in the system, their type of government, affiliation, and will tell you which ones are engaged in a civil war, or how close they are to one. Running missions for different factions within a system will change the balance of power, and can somewhat directly influence whether or not competing factions go to war.

Be careful. I always managed to very quickly attract the attention of the NPC Pythons and Anacondas for the opposing faction, and once they've started attacking you, they're rather prone to singlemindedly sticking to you.

Here is the Payout for each ship in a CZ.
Nothing is really as profitable as trading in ED atm but CZs can be highly profitable and fun. Once you get a ship that can take on those Pythons and Anacondas (recomend a Vulture or Python or similar ship if you are alone) left right and center and ammassing a great deal of combat vouchers in no time.

I don't think fighting in a combat zone affects your reputation with factions, so you can fight for the side that is not your allied without repercussions outside of the CZ (I think anyway), but if you do missions related to the CZs, that buletin boards sometimes have, to take out sucha number of ships of a certain faction in a CZ in that system, that will have faction influence and reputation impact.

Was hunting yesterday exactly there. Ryazansky DOck (Or whatever it's called! D:) allows for High Intensity Combat Zones coupled with the Outpost facilities for Repair and Rearm.

Why is it better than the Coriolis Station there (of which I can't seem to recall the name)? Simply because should you ever experience the Itchy-Trigger-Finger and do something that lands a Fine or Bounty on your head, an Outpost never check you as you land.

It's MUCH simpler to clear your records (and smuggle stuff uhrm-ehmp)...

My personal advice is to get a serious Shield Cell bank to recharge your shields fast when SH!t it's about to hit the fan.

So to speak.

System defense force only means it's not Federal navy. Out of all the minor factions in a system there might be some wacky communist one with 2% influence fighting legit Federal forces, but they'll still be called defense forces. It's a misleading title, it always depends on who's involved.

Cool.
Yes I have been doing reading and investigating to figure it all out.
This level of detail always fascinates me.

just gave the Nuenets low intensity zone a throw ... and pocketed 240,000 in about 20 min, you do have to be a bit careful about which targets you pick .. its very easy to get ganged up on ... but apart from that good money to be made there, I sided with the Nuenets Corp

Dont think of it as being vastly outnumbered ... but just having a large target selection.

The only thing more accurate than incoming fire, is incoming friendly fire

Tracers work BOTH ways...

Have you tried putting a kill warrant scanner on your ship and dropping into a high risk extraction site? Basically you sit about 6-8 kms from the zone marker and wait for wanted ships to turn up, scan them normally to get their wanted status, scan them with the kill warrant scanner to max the bounty. After that you just decide whether they are ok from a tactical viewpoint (ie are they in a wing or too hard otherwise to engage and win) as 99% of the time as long as you don't have cargo on board they will leave you alone after scanning you. Especially in the more capable combat ships and with some luck you can clear 600-800k in about 30-40 mins. I've a m8 who is up in the python/fer de lance level and he tends to average around 2-3M an hour. Also there is a bit of control over what enemies you get as the trend is that what you kill is mostly what spawns. So kill a viper and you will likely get another. You do end up with a lot of police patrols around the point over time so you can use them to soften up hard targets as you just need to get some shots in to get the money. Works very well in a wing set up with friends. Just be careful of friendly fire on the patrol ships though as when it happens you will need to bug out very quickly to avoid getting blown away by the cops.

Cheers,
Stonehouse

Me too. With the CObra Mk.III I managed a hair under the million in Combat bonds in an hour. That is I still have to account for ammo and repairs (roughly 30K combined...)

I like it- Just be ever careful for that Python that *Might* notice you now and then! biggrin
