So sad; I wonder how many other similar cases there will be to add to the horrendous toll. BBC news

I think a lot of asbestos in those buildings, and when they collapsed it was crushed into dust and the people near it inhaled it. Kills you if you're out of luck.

I saw this in Rome in 2006. Never forgive, never forget. No intention to take this into PWEC country. Just a memory.

The buildings had a lot of carcinogens in their construction from the early 70s. A LOT of first responders have died of cancer and others from respiratory ailments.

What a sad story, but I'm sure her family was grateful she had an extra 14 years to spend with them, whereas so many others didn't get another minute.

In the military, we have an Alive Day. It is the day that we faced death and escaped its grasp. Being that I have gone septic so many times with MRSA and had my family visit me expecting me to die, I don't truly have an Alive Day*, where I reflect on the blessings of escaping death. Instead, I live everyday grateful I have another one with my family and that I am able to do a little more good for such a bad world.
*Some guys celebrate it by getting wasted, others do it by quietly reflecting, others do it by being with their loved one. It is a very personal day for everyone who has one.

To be honest, her story is captivating and worth remembering, but a direct connection from dust to stomach cancer seems a tad unlikely. I'd wager it had as much or more to do with her admitted alcoholism than the dust. But I'm no Doctor.
I refuse to buy a flight sim that I have no interest in playing, on the off chance that MAYBE someday they'll make the one I really want to play.

If there was such a link I would think we would see a lot more people getting stomach cancer.
I think stats show a rather low rate of alcoholics getting it.

There are few known causes of stomach cancer. The asbestos was more likely to affect her lungs. She may have simply lost in the genetic lottery.

9/11... What a turning point. I used to work at the WTC.. fixing their printers.. I moved from N.Y. almost a year to the day before 9/11.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

Sometimes what you think is your worst day is a blessing in the end. That needs to be remembered and celebrated as much as any birthday, just more solemn.
