Updated to Win10 from 8.1 and it didn't go so well.

Both my vanilla version of CoD (which uses CloDer.exe) and my TF version have stopped working. Have tried all sorts of emulation modes as well, no luck. I also lost my audio: I can either have speakers, or headphones but not both (neither the old drivers, nor the new 'win10' drivers work). Not so worried about that though because that is clearly a driver issue for the ViaHD sound card. It would sort itself out as they get bug reports and update their drivers.

I only updated to Win10 out of interest but can see no benefit to Win10 at all - looks and feels identical to Win8.1. I guess my best option is to roll back to 8.1?

I really don't want the hassle of a complete uninstall reinstall of 3 flavours of CoD (I have vanilla plus the desert mod, plus TF4) only to find out I still can't get it flying. It was all fine under 8.1

If there is some simple workaround though (apart from emulation modes) I havent tried I'll try it.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, just out of interest did you get a major update about 3 days after you upgraded?
I upgraded with zero issues from win7 and all major titles work fine.

Hi G

No major update that I am aware of. The ViaHD audio problem seems to be widespread among ASUS ROG laptop users, so that will no doubt be fixed. I usually only use headphones anyway so that could wait.

The update was largely problem free once I sorted out some issues with the NVidia drivers. Other games are all fine, CoD is the only problem, but that is enough to provoke me to roll back, as the only benefit I can see in Win10 is search, ie not a biggie.

I know a few guys on th ATAG forums have been discussing win10 and CloD, with varying degrees of success/ filaure. For some it simply doens't work, and for others there have been performance gains!
At the moment, I cannot see any spcific or consistent resons why this is the case...

We had a similar discussion on SoW here: http://stormofwar.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=2125
But it hasn't really moved on much, I think most folks are stickign with existing OS installations that work, rather than risk it!

I second that.

I rolled back without any drama at all...got all my functionality back, CoD works in all flavours, sound card works again, so luckily I can report that (so far) the roll back option works though it is a bit cheeky that you only have one month to do it.

Now I just need to find out how to get Windows 10 out of my update queue! Even though I uncheck it, every time I reboot I get notified that the update is downloading and will soon be ready to install...maybe I should jut let it download, but not install it.

H

EDIT: I see problem. I had previously set autoupdate to 'download but do not install'. The rollback reset it back to 'autoupdate everything'. Cheeky frickers.

PS just in case you thought that turning off all those 'send all my data to Microsoft' options actually works, see article here:

http://arstechnica.com/information-techn...g-to-microsoft/

There is a reason Windows10 is free - MS is going to suck up and commercialise all your data people.

Heinkill,I suggest you make use of the Windows 'image' backup facility just for future reference. It's a godsend.I did a clean install of 7,ran all updates, drivers etc plus installed my most popular games and then created an image. It proved invaluable whilst I wrestled with multiple installs of Win 10.

Just out of curiosity, were you using sweetfx, injectfx or some other post processing video software? These are not yet compatible with win10 and will keep the game from starting.

A clause in the services agreement, Section 7b to be precise, states that Windows 10 users have to allow Microsoft to automatically check for counterfeited software

"We may automatically check your version of the software and download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorised hardware peripheral devices," reads the agreement.

Win 10 can disable hacked hardware and illegal software, and steal your lunch and your wife! pitchafit

Hi Murph, no. Plain vanilla. Though to run on Win8.1 it needs CloDer.exe.

Hey I just got an email saying 'congratulations on upgrading to Windows 10.'

Nup. Win10 is back. Deleted that update as noted by chuck, removed it from the queue, hid the win10 update. But now, when I go to install any 'important update' win10 starts downloading again.

Grrrrrr

That's odd H.I've done that to 3 systems so far without issue. In fairness I haven't had to install an important update since.I thought that once an update was 'hidden' it was hidden for good. This may be a constant battle.

I'll change it to 'download but don't install' and let it download. See if that shuts it up.

Another thing I did to get rid of the downloaded Win 10 files is to run 'disk cleanup' select 'clean up system files' and tick 'Temporary Installation Files'.It could be quite big 5+ gigs. You might also want to un-install KB 2952664 and KB 2976978 (both Win 10 'nagware' updates).

*I just ran an important update on another system that has the Win 10 update hidden and it stayed hidden*

Success. When I ran 'install important updates' it downloaded win 10 again and then installed the other updates without starting the win 10 install process.

Now I'll clean up as you suggest.

Thx

Damn thing tried to install 10 again this morning.I'm really getting pi$$ed off with having this forced on me.I don't want 10.I should be able to completely opt out of having it forced down my throat mad

If only Linux had better game support I'd never install Windows again.

(Touches wooden leg).

PS mine was an install/rollback over the top of 8.1. Havent tried on a win7 machine.

G did you do a fresh install or did you install it over your W7 copy...?

I moved to Windows 10 a few weeks ago with no problems other than COD would not open at all. I just had the vanilla Steam COD installed as I've been waiting for TF Version 5 before starting to fly again. Yesterday on a whim I decided to installed the TF patches, and COD started up with no problem. COD seems to work just fine, but I haven't setup my controllers, and just used my keyboard to fly a quick mission.
