Great job Scoobe. With all that effort on the wood, I would have been tempted to stain and varnish it smile

I may have missed it, but did you post any info about the pilot? He sure looks good. Did you carve him? He looks to have a lot more detail than the styrene halves that get glued together usually included in the kit.

About 25 years ago, when I built flying rubber powered models I would carve a pilot out of white foam from shipping containers. That was before Blue Core and Pink Insulation became a popular building material. I'm sure they would have turned out a lot smoother.

I got the pilot and prop from my local hobby store. He came as a solid white, plastic (unpainted) figure. I think it was about $9, but it was worth it. They came in 3 different sizes, but that was the only one left. I was lucky because it was just the size I needed. It was easy to paint and he has a lot of detail. However, he is wearing a US flight suit, but I wasnt going to be that picky. He fit perfectly
(maybe a little small, but close enough.

The prop was from an RC mmodel of the same size, but had squared off tips. I had to round them off with sand paper. They give you schematics to carve a wood prop, but I figured it would break too easily.

Great job! I did that with a Jap Zero with 1/32 balsa panels between the fuse and wing framing. It looked great, heavy as all get-out, but you can't beat the results for appearances!

After a year, We finally finished this model. I took a break from it several times for months at a time, but a had some time with my son and we cranked it out. I really kinda rushed towards the end. I wanted to get it out of the way and was worried it would end up thrown into a closet and eventually crushed. So I worked on it for the last 3 weekends and hung it from the ceiling of my sons room.

Every kids room needs a Spitfire I say!

The Spitfire goes well with the Corsair and Mustang already there. They were not kits, but planes I bought from Toys r Us years ago. The corsair is plastic and has retractable gear. The Mustang is die cast metal and also has movable gear, flaps and cowling.
