According to Steam I've spend 100 hrs with the game so far.

I am very happy with how the game is developing and I have zero issues with the ships' speed in open world.

I was a bit surprised when I saw my Lynx speedboating across the waves at first but I got used to it pretty quickly and the effect is far less distracting with bigger ships.

Para, each to their own. I'm glad you are having fun with it. To my eye it looks comical to see ships zipping around. It is not what I envisaged, and so for me it is quite a letdown.

The problem is I can't see how it could be done much better differently. To be able to cover the vast distances there are only two options: scale down the map or increase the speed of the ships. With the current model I sail about 1.000km in a bit over 1 hour in real life and several days in game. To achieve a similar result with "realistic speeds" the map would have to be compressed by a factor of ~ 50 or more. The result would be a miniature world comparable to Assassin's Creed Black Flag where you run into other ships at ridiculous intervals and islands are basically next to each other. And even that game uses a time speed up system, too.

With the vast world in NA and the system of time compression you can actually spend days of in game time without seeing another ship. Or land. I like that very much.

Also as mentioned the visual effect of the time compression is IMO greatly less pronounced with bigger ships.

If NA was a single player game I'd click on "leave port", then press TAB to switch on acceleration while sailing to my destination. It's just the time acceleration in NA is always on.

Yes, indeed thats the problem. But its mainly a problem beeing a MP title. Single Player like Silent Hunter series would have been nice.

New patch released: two new ships (Belle Poule and Pickle), commands for AI fleets, buying/selling stuff, improved hardbours (textures and lighting by night!) etc...

ahoy

For those that have it already, are you happy with the game thus far and are you content with an early purchase? I know its multiplayer focused but I know at least until I learned it I'd want alone time within the game. I'd actually prefer single player but it looks too good to pass up on as a sailing sim. I'm only asking because money for me is tight right now and knowing now how much the product is for something that is still in Alpha I hesitate. I really want to get it but pricing for the game is much more than I was expecting. I'm not complaining I'm just feeling more cautious now as I don't have much monies to play with. Thanks.

It is very hard to be happy with a game that is still Alpha. It's not really a game, but a test of basic concepts, devoid of a huge amount of content and with elements that are either broken or in a state of rapid change. Basically, unless you are willing to approach the experience as a tester rather than a customer, you will probably have a negative experience. You are paying for a preorder only. That said, it is a very active testing community that the devs seem to listen to, at least sometimes. The majority of testers seem to be interested in a sandbox openworld where you can play any Age of Sail experience you want with combat that is strongly anchored in the realities of the age. Hopefully that is what we'll get, but it's still early enough that the game could take a different direction and turn into a huge disappointment. Investor beware.

If you buy in now, you'll find a game world that is huge and sparsely populated with players. You can go off to some far corner of the map and just fight the AI, but that can get boring very fast. You will probably want to hook up with a group. Also note that a new player in the starter ship can PvP with zero loss and advance faster than when fighting AI. It'll be frustrating as you learn, but again, there is no loss.

Para, what is your handle in game?

Okay thanks for the input. I think I'll wait. I really do hope this turns out to be a good one but its just too much money for what it is right now for me anyways. I'll wait until it hopefully gets released either EA or gold on Steam.

My interactions though with an individual from their team via emails have been pleasant. I just don't know enough about them or the project yet to make the purchase I feel.

Me playing the Naval Action ALPHA open world over the last few nights....

Please note this is all Alpha footage. The open world is Alpha.
Please DO NOT look at this and say it looks ugly. A lot of things are place holders but it does give a general idea of where the game is heading.

Had something cool happen to me last night in Naval Action. I joined a battle in which two human Frenchmen were fighting three Spaniards. One actually asked me if I wanted a Mercury. I said that would be cool and he captured it for me during the battle, apologised that he had de-masted it and let me take it. I fixed the mast and continued the battle. Because it was a captured ship however I only get one life (durability they call it) in it.
So I have to be careful not to get smashed by a larger fleet BUT in the mean time I have a nice ship to earn some gold above my pay grade in.
We also played a second battle together... which was fun.
I now have these French (in real life) gents as friends and have committed to helping them if ever they need it and they me. Some players in this game are honourable men!
Later I joined an even battle with a Frenchman vs a Spaniard in the same ships. Turned out to be the same gent and I was asked not to shoot. I willingly let these gents duel.
Some things in this game are reminding me of war of the roses.... this age is indeed an age of civilised combat and has attracted some good men.

The Mercury is a great "little boat" smile I sailed it till last week. Its good to learn the manual sails, fast and well equipped. Several times I got attacked by bigger fleets, did a broadside and had to run. The Mercury can smile

My new detachment is the Frigate "Belle Poule". I love it.
