Kyle Franklin just posted on Facebook that Steve O'Berg has crashed at the Cameron Airshow, he was flying his Pitts when the engine lost power during a low level maneuver. Nothing is known about his condition yet.

Every year it seems to be who and when? Instead of what if?

It really does seem like air show crashes happen more frequently these days or is it that we just hear more about them thanks to the Internet?

I kind of hold my breath every summer since Kyle lost his wife Amanda, and every Summer there has been at least one or two who don't make it through the season. And I have quite a few of these guys on my Facebook.
[edit[ saw the video he was in a slow spin which looked liked it started inverted, then went positive, the engine was sputtering ..and he never recovered the spin. Sad, with no power he couldn't get enough airspeed to pull it out.

Very sad.. Just volunteered at our local airshow yesterday. What these pilots do is amazing, and I think people take for granted how dangerous some of this stuff can be.. Prayers to his family..

The engine did not lose power. It was a shoulder roll taken one turn too far with recovery started too low. What you are hearing is the norma prop governor cycling with speed plus a small bit of sound distance delay.

I was taking what I heard from a news report as the cause and applying it to the video, thanks for the clarification. all it takes is a split second.

Yep. This accident has some people head-scratching. The shoulder roll part and the bad ending is, unfortunately pretty common. But the stuff he does prior makes very little sense. There is a Hammer at :50 that he seems to convert to a wingover. Then later he pulls into what looks like what would be a torque roll or tailslide. Instead he pushes out into something like a humpty. It seems like his head just simply wasn't in it. He had recently been given a 500 foot waiver. Maybe that gave him a little too much confidence.
