Think I'll pick it up.

Any good (TOTAL) beginner tips?

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck.”

LOL That's a pretty broad question but I'll attempt to provide some tips. smile

1. Food, food and more food. Food supply in Rome 2 is critical so always make sure you have a positive supply.

2. Don't waste food upgrading religious buildings if the province already has a very high public order. No sense in having overkill with public order because whether public order is at +10 or +50 the effects are the same.

3. The AI is predictable and is easily prone to flanking attacks in 3D battles. Hence, recruit lots of cavalry and use them to good effect by outflanking his army and hitting it from the rear.

4. I've found that ramming attacks are by far the most effective way to defeat an enemy fleet. Ramming will damage and sink ships much faster than using boarding actions or ranged attacks.

I didn't get this during the steam sale, but it's back to 75% off for the weekend. Pretty tempted to pick it up... Or would I be better served picking up Attila instead? The time-frame of the original interests me more than the huns, but I don't know if there is some amazing improvement that I hadn't read about yet. Thoughts?

All right, sweethearts, what are you waiting for? Breakfast in bed? Another glorious day in the corps! A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I LOVE the corps!

My opinion is you should go with Rome II.

"I have only two men out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold."

Attila has improved graphics and better AI behavior but it's much tougher on PC hardware compared to Rome 2. Unless you have a top notch gaming rig you will notice a significant fps drop with Attila. Having said that, I've been enjoying Attila quite a lot and I love the new feature of dynamic fire during a siege battle. Fire will spread from building to building.
