I know you all are fond of these old games and I probably would be too. But they're old. I don't have to install them and go through the fubar colossus of trying to make them work on a PC today to see that they're old. I'm sure they had great content but their campaign could be voiced over by Chuck Yeager himself and it wouldn't change the fact that they're old!

Why do you think I never get into a discussion about, for instance, the original 'Red Baron' game?... it's because I've never played it, don't have any experience of what the community were doing with it, or what they felt like when they played it, and I certainly wouldn't presume to tell people how it compares with a much later version!

To really understand why people are so irked about why the 'successor' has not come up to scratch, you have to have been involved in the previous era of what was a revolutionary approach to combat flight simming... that's why our expectations are so high.

There, fixed wink

The stock BoS campaign is about 25 to 30 years behind the times.

Does anyone else have to go through "fubar colossus" to get IL-2 1946 running?
Not me, I've got the same folder on a removeable drive that I've had for years - it just works. And as another poster above me said, it's not about the graphics, it's about the gameplay.

"fubar colossus" my foot, a simple DOSBox installation and finding some ROMs on *ahem* a torrent site was enough for me to play Chuck Yeager's, Aces, Their Finest Hour, Red Baron...all of them have better career modes than BoS

However, BoS' campaign is still alright when played at your leisure... it's being forced to play it for unlocks that pisses me off about it

Everything to do with PCs is a freakin disaster.... I may have just got out of another game crash fest that had something to do with boot priorities on my BIOS that my PC support guys had to work on for days. Then there's the usual work of just figuring out sims and such. I really like to spend more time actually playing games on the PC than screwing around with it.

Actually I have been open to trying out older games in the past. If the 1946 version on Steam was compatible with Windows 7 (it's XP) I'd probably check it out if I could click and zap it into the drive in 10 minutes. But all the modding? forget it.

Excellent! Just this screenshot also gives those who can read between the lines an idea of just how tedious an undertaking this is.. All the best man.. cheers

Do yourself a favor Sharpe.. get 46.. It may be old but I am telling you man .. it is still after all this time an enjoyable piece of kit..

Truth be told.. the graphics in IL2 as old as they are are still not bad at all today.. Not at all.. just a little dated but just about any rig should be able to run it on maxed out settings and let me tell you Sharpe .. as some of these guys can attest.. IL2 is still the greatest WWII flight sim of all time when taken in it's entirety as a total package. It has absolutely no equal. None.. and anyone who has the slightest hint of appreciation for WWII simming should have it on their hard drive.. It is simple to install.. runs like butter and has a planeset that will probably never be matched anywhere.. and that is just stock.. If you look at modded.. fugheddabouddit..

Sharpe.. you really need to get IL2... It will give you a greater appreciation for some of the things that are missing in BoS .. as well as some of the things that they got extremely right.. and remember there is a reason why for well over a decade and in many many ways to this very day IL2 is the standard by which just about every WWII CFS is and will be measured.. If you have never experienced it then you really should have nothing to say about it at all.... Now shut up and get off this site and go get 46!! What in Sam Hill are you waiting for..

Get the GOG version IL2 1946, just don't install it to Program Files (x86). And if you have any trouble installing it, we're here for ya, man.

Only $2.49 right now, quite a bargain.

I'm on Win 7/64 and installing IL-2 1946 was two simple steps:

1. Install base game.

2. Install 4.12 update patch (I think the latest is 4.13)

Done in 10 or 15 minutes. IL-2 1946 is super easy to install and run. This base install let's you run 400 to 500 community made campaigns like "Luftwaffe Pilot: Afrika!" by FlatSpinMan. If you want to do more exotic mods you can but they aren't necessary.

You can set up a quick mission in IL2 with 64 planes in the air, any time day or night on one of dozens of maps.. against about 80% of the fighters that fought in WWII.. rain, snow, thunderstorms with lightening.. you got it..

IL2 may be old but it is still a damn good product and it will be around in some form for as long as people are using PCs ...
