When Janes/EA called it quits the market went pooof.

I saw it coming with the closing of janescombat.net

Which jad 1000+ users on it during down time, and significantly more than that during peak.

Makes sense. They were the last US-based combat flight sim developer.

IAF, F-15, F-18, and of course Fighters Athology...

Janes F-18, source code was leaked a while back, many were expecting it to become the next Falcon4 in terms of re compiled versions..

GOG is pretty much the last hope for any of those gems, and I doubt it'll happen.

That wasn't even really them as far as I was concerned. It was a US publisher but the developer wasn't in the US anymore.

Of course, Strike Fighters has that feel to it, which is why I like it, and it's so easily modded.

there wasnt a Janes ww2fighters 2, or EAW 2 or etc etc that's totally irrelevant if there was not a 2,3 or 4 of the series. Flight sims have never worked like this.

lol...yes...I know how flight sims work. You are missing my point and taking offense for some reason. I still fly EAW, Falcon, Red Baron 3D, Mig Alley, and CFS2. I know they are not dead so to speak...some still have active modding communities...the studios that created them are dead is the point.

I would disagree somewhat on your point that they never worked like this...especially with the example I was making about Microsoft's series. They seemed to embrace the numbering method.

Judging by how Microsoft just adds a number or a year at the end...it's a safe bet that the next CFS title would have been CFS4. My point was if a good portion of the community didn't jump ship and switch to IL-2...there might have been a 4th.

Maybe... I always thought that too.. that IL2 put quite a few nails in the coffin of CFS.. All this begs the question though.. where are simmer flying because on any given night if you look at DCS, CoD, BoS and IL2 combined they do not come close to the numbers we used to see in the heyday of IL2.. Perhaps a lot have just moved on..

I think you guys are still using on line only as a representation of the whole industry, which will always give you a conclusion that is well off base.

And Force no offense taken but note how in an industry of hundreds your list includes less than a handful of titles that had numbers beyond 3-4. And of those titles its worth noting how massive they are and yet how small online player numbers have been over the years.

That's a valid point since a lot of flight simmers only play offline but it's also a fact that the online numbers for for both CLoD and BoS are tiny compared to IL-2.

I do think thats easy to explain, the classic il-2 we all played was a multiplayer sim (with each new update focusing more on the none single player aspects) where as the others you have mentioned tend to have more focus on the single player experience?

Very valid points on both counts.. but I was speaking specifically in terms of online anyway as there really is no way to accurately count the offline numbers.

Theres actually some sites that do steam numbers for at least a glimpse to the steam listed ones (have to add in margins for estimation due to the numbers not being 100% and the software available out of the steam eco system). It made the news that FSX steam edition did over 250,000 copies not long after release and seems to be doing ok with regards new blood coming in.

250k copies for any flight sim is utterly fantastic.

If a sim included both SP and MP aspects, how can you define one as primarily SP and another as primarily MP? Just because you flew it one way doesn't mean another person didn't do it differently.

Personally, back in the 90s I played almost 100% of my sims as SP because of connection stability over dial up and costs and lack of people to fly with (I despise public servers for any game). Come the 21st century, I began playing my flight sims primarily coop MP because I had a group to fly with, broadband made it free and reliable, and since I was spending the time in MP I didn't bother to also play them in SP, I reserved that time for other games that were SP-only.

Nowadays, most of my sims are either 100% MP or 100% SP, as the ones without MP like Strike Fighters (or the ones I don't fly online like BoS and CloD) get my SP time, and the ones I can fly MP like ROF, DCS, and Il-2 I only play MP. Yet I'd say in the first few years I flew Il-2 50/50, but I did spend more SP time on CFS3 than MP, so more or less as time passed CFS3 became my offline WWII sim and Il-2 my MP one.
