When I flew Free Flight in CFS3 and in fact any other flight sim I can think of you were safe from enemy action.
Today I set up a free flight for my pilot flying a Sopwith Camel. I wanted to get more familiar with the handling.
I had only flown one campaign mission and had a claim for a Pfalz rejected.
After taking off on this free flight I looked at the map and noticed I was close to the lines and out of devilment flew towards them. I then noticed I was heading towards an enemy Obs Ballon. As I crossed the lines I noticed artillery fire on the ground, but all was quiet in the air.
I spied the enemy ballon and flew towards it and began my attack. Then all hell let loose. Archie was going off everywhere, I destroyed the ballon and skeddadled back to my air field hotly pursued by very angry archie.
I escaped unscathed and landed. I was then asked to file a report for my claim....it was confirmed the next day!
What enemy activity is in free flight?
Is there a risk of running into any enemy aircraft if you cross the lines?
I took off to check my aircraft...crossed the lines...bagged a balloon..and got back for breakfast! My standing in the mess has risen more than somewhat!
Incidently. if I fly a quick combat mission, after it is completed I always advance time in my pilots campaign to represent the mission I had flown. Am I correct to do this?
Cheers

In Free flight you will not see any air activity, whilst you still can attack ground objectives, and of course be targeted from them. You can play daredevil and land on an enemy aerodrome, touch and go,and leave asap,if you have the nerves of course! I don't think I want to be that Gungho with my pilot! I was shocked enough that I could attack an object in free flight and have it retaliate! It's war!

Yes, I believe Cavaliere57 is correct. In QC "free flight", you are the only plane in the air unless you take wingmen. Waypoints are generated, trucks are moving along roads and everything gets spawned. Also, you can get hit by AA or ground fire in QC and I think that your campaign will end if you get killed. I usually log about 20 hours in QC for additional training which gets recorded into my campaign.

In Workshops, you can specify IF you want all flights and kills logged(both Campaign and QC) and if your pilot "never dies" while in QC,whatever activity you do,so there are really no risks and it's a good starting point to get accustomed with different planes, before the real thing.
