Maybe not the answer, but in WWII RNAS pilots wore their wings on the chest á la RAF when wearing battledress, with rank on the epaulettes again like the RAF. In full uniform the wings and rank rings were on the sleeve. This is the reason for the title "Wings on my sleeve" of the book by Eric 'winkle' Brown RN.

CaNy_Ace88, the discussion Shredward directed you to is a good one on the subject. When it comes to the RNAS uniforms it gets muddled because of early confusion and misreading of the first Admiralty Orders dealing with the subject of uniforms and badges. There appeared to be several shades of RNAS 'khakis', along with different ideas on whether the buttons on said khakis should be gold or brass finish, and whether rank braid should be bright or subdued. But the biggest debacle surrounded the wearing of the wings. Cuff, epaulet, or left breast of the tunic, or a combination? Pilots only, or anyone involved in actual flight duties, regardless of rank or rating? It was a royal mess.
