I complain about not having time to fly... and look what I get myself into. For Christmas, my brother-in-law wanted to get me a WWI print for my office/"cockpit". But as we were picking out one for me, he was completely smitten with the print pictured below. And so I went sneaking back to the site and ordered it for him. Then, I offerred to frame the two prints (So he didn't spend heaven knows how much on custom frames).

Tonight I finally finished his frame (yeah - since Christmas...). The frame is made from a Pennsylvania wild cherry tree in my yard that I had to fell. I harvested, dried, and milled it myself. The iron crosses are simply basswood from the hobby store. I chose the blocked corner design because 45° mitered corners are enough to make any preacher that I know begin to cuss, stomp, and throw things around.

The print really is charming. The Baron & his brother Lothar, and their dog, in a candid moment... you can almost hear the birds singing. It's so peaceful it belies the horrible conflict all around. So here's my little show-off pic. Enjoy!

Well done on multiple counts. Wish it could hang in my home. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, guys. The print he bought for me will hang in my office/cockpit. It's called Showtime at the Circus". (That's not a promo for that particular site, you can get it lots of places; that's just the first site that came up). I'm still picking at it - I have the Iron Crosses cut out and the frame is ready for final finish and assembly, but in contrast to the one above, I'll have matting around mine, and Iron Crosses in two corners, roundels in the other two. Cutting concentric circles out of thin basswood is not fun, I'm afraid... I'm still learning.

I'm thinking next year I'll have to get him something from our own JFM, a very talented artist.

Being an artist myself, I don't buy much art. But I saw this print of Sopwith Tripes; it took my breath. All done in the computer.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.

I'm a Dietz fan...

I have 'Circus Rolls at Dawn' and 'Voss's last flight' framed and hanging on my walls.

I'm taking notes... biggrin

Thanks for the tips. But I'm already running out of wall space, I'll have to just keep switching them out!
