Hey guys, i flew a patrol earlier over a friendly airfield and got into a scrap with a lone German. I ended up getting wounded to 67% and my gunner 72% also a bullet punched a hole into my engine causing smoke and my engine to die out. Luckily my wingman was able to shoot him down from behind me and i was able to glide my Strutter close to the airfield, but i was a tad bit short and landed into a field where my plane gently, and i mean gently ran into a fence. Debrief comes up and me and my gunner are dead..."shot down" after all that...14 missions to hell and back...and i die from a fence? Or is it because we possibly died from our wounds? the debrief said "shot down" so i am confused and a little bummed.

You just encountered the 'Titanium fences of WOFF'. In WOFF fences have killed more pilots than almost anything else. My advice is stay away from them at all costs. biggrin

If you are badly wounded you can die anyway let alone hitting something else. You could have been trapped in the aircraft or bled to death.

I had the impression after the last patch or so, that the fences were made less lethal now?
Or maybe some people were just more lucky - I had seen at least three reports, where users
had run into fences and survived it.

Darn that sucks, i couldn't produce any more lift and just basically had set her down where she wanted. I saw the fence coming up and i was a bit worried but by the time i reached it the plane was almost at a stop...sigh of relief, waved to my wingman who flew over to check on me then DEATH. Hahaha oh well i'll keep that in mind next time. Still a little sad i have been separated from my squadies after a month or so, but i've been having a blast nonetheless!

So if i get shot and wounded my pilot can bleed out and die at any time if i don't land soon enough?

That is tough Bad0pel, and we've all felt your pain as concerns those fences. As to getting shot, it's usually best not too.

When you land and are badly wounded sometimes you will die, the WOFF manager will decide that. Just like fate/real life, if you are almost dead badly wounded, sometimes you will die shortly after even if in hospital whatever.

I have crashed many times into a fence and survived, just luck and how badly you are damaged/hurt too. But again like in real life you tend to try to avoid things like fences if you are in an aircraft.

And also, like in real life, you tend to avoid getting shot if at all possible.

The lethality of the fences has been reduced I believe. I have hit them twice and survived with additional visual damage to my aircraft. It should be noted that both times I was unwounded and going slow. Even hit a tent hanger once (again going pretty slow) and it just brought me to a dead stop.

I suspect it is a dice roll on landing affair. I certainly have lost a pilot this way that was wounded but had made a decent landing.

It happened plenty. Especially since this is a war fought before antibiotics were widely available.

Duke, I can't decide if the fences have actually been made less lethal or if we're all just getting better about not running into them the way we used to.

Maeran, agreed. Add to that the fact that a lot of WWI pilots had immune systems operating at less than optimum performance due to poor diet, lack of sleep, stress, heavy drinking, and god knows what else.

And you wonder why all the new aircraft go to other pilots and you always get their handmedowns?
