.... got a few Blue-screens the last days.

Specs are in my sig.

MoBo is an Asus P8P67, the first Rev. with the SB bug, the DVD is dead for some time now.

So time to move on. I`m out of the loop for some time, but my i7 2600k seems still to be okay-ish performance-wise.

So, what way to go, getting a socket 1155 MoBo again and keeping the CPU or moving onwards?

TIA

Karsten

Have you written down the hexcodes (e.g. 0x0000001A) and error messages of the bluescreens by any chance? These might help to analyse the issue.

Hard to tell what causes this, without any further info - but from my experience the first and best guess usually is faulty RAM or (rarer, but not impossible) the RAM-slots or controller of the mainboard.

I would also check the RAM with Memtest86 first, but I believe you would need a DVD drive to run it. Propably there are other alternative programs though. Whenever I had Bluescreens in most cases it was a defective RAM stick. Remove one stick and test if still Bluescreens occur. If yes, then take out the other stick and test again. If the RAM is ok,then move on to the other components, the PSU can also cause Bluescreens. I had even a certain NVIDIA Driver cause Bluescreens. It's hard to find out the exact reasons, overheating can also be an issue. Are the temperature of your CPU and Graphic card allright? Bluescreens happening while gaming or even when only in Windows?

Googling for the Hexcodes as suggested can help finding the cause too.

If your PC otherwise runs still great it's worth trying to get rid of the bluescreen. Or if you plan to go for a new build anyway, I'd go for a more recent CPU although the 2600K is still a great Processor.

Yeah, a bluescreen by itself is meaningless without context. It could be a bad driver. It could be a dying HD (the rest of the PC is fine), it could be bad RAM (rest of the PC is fine), it could be corrupted files that just requires an OS reload (rest of the PC is fine)...well I think you see the pattern.

Not necessarily, you can also run it via a USB-stick.

Did some tests this weekend,

HD seems ok, tortured the CPU with Prime, temps are ok, voltages also, memory also ok.

I get this "nvlddmkm stopped working" error which points to the GFX card. Screen turns black always I enter a game.

The BSODs I seem to have solved after watching the systems events and googling the errors.

I ordered a Asus GTX 970, hopefully it will delivered Tuesday and end my problems.

You try uninstalling/reinstalling the driver? Sometimes it's the card's fault, sometimes it's a corrupted driver.

This will be a longer trip....

I got the new card, and yes, card was around 1 cm too long, even though the Asus homepage said, the 970 was as long as my current 570. '!§%$*+!!!!!

So I stripped the cover of the 970 to see if the errors are gone. Plugged it in, no more picture on the monitor, it stays black.

So I plugged the old card into the second PCIe slot, works. However the second PCIe shares resources with other things (IIRC USB) and I have a constant noise whenever I move the mouse. So it seems the first PCIe socket was causing the problems.

Okay, searched the web for new socket 1155 boards, not many left, only used ones, which I don`t want. Finally found a dealer who had some Asrock P67 Pro boards left, came today, really brand-new. Drove to a local small computer shop and bought a used PC case for 15 €.

I will build the new one over the weekend, as Monday is a holiday here.

My plan is un-installing the chip-set drivers on the old board, plugging the new system together and trying to get away without re-installing Windows and all the stuff. Hope it works, but as both boards have the Intel P67 chip-set, I`m quite optimistic.

Wish me luck, it`s the first time I`m pluggin a PC together by myself. eek

Well just take a few minutes to read the install guide that comes with the board it could be helpful especially for a first timer..

Also make sure you destatic yourself.. Static Electricity can kill these types of electronics.. Another thing to add with the Intel CPU it should only fit one way there is a marked corner on the CPU inset on the motherboard and on the chip it is marked make sure to match those corners or if you install the CPU wrong and bolt down the latch you could break the CPU and Voila screwed..

if you run into problems hopefully you have a secondary pc you can come here and post your concerns.. But Static Electricity and the CPU Install are my 2 main concerns..
