Yes, but you guys seem fascinated with coins that have all sort of inscriptions *except* their actual value. What's up with that?! Every time I go to the US I have to relearn them all over again.

EDIT: And their size an value don't correlate! Smaller coin > smaller value, it should be that simple!

When you're feeling sad, just remember that somewhere in the world, there's someone pushing a door that says "pull".

they stopped minting them; I've kept a handful in my
change ever since, and pay for anything that doesn't
come out to an even 0.05 with them (the single cent is
still used for computing prices and taxes, but the
resulting number is rounded to the nearest 0.05, with
the one penny rounding in the customers' favour). I
still have about 1.5lb to go. For the last few months
I've started encountering sales girls who say "Sorry
sir, but we don't take these anymore" and I have to
tell them yes, you do, it's the law. You don't give
them out, but you have to take them. I hope to have
them all dispensed before they change the law. When
they do, all the 100% copper pennies that I sorted
from the fake ones (which rust orange, not green) will
be cashed in for metal value, at about 2.5 each...

I worked at target for 5 years. The only people that could do small change in their head were those my age (28) and over. Anyone below that? Forget it. They were in awe of the rest of us. Probably one of the things that bothered me the most while working there, (and that's saying something....)

All right, sweethearts, what are you waiting for? Breakfast in bed? Another glorious day in the corps! A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I LOVE the corps!

Funny to think that "The Who" became synonymous with singing about the young generation and not "getting" the older generation and now Daltrey and Townshend are in their early 70's!

LOL. that's brilliant, lets start with getting rid of the penny like Canada did...

Cash in general is on the way out, albeit very very slowly. If I ever get change from anything it sits in my car for 6 months at a time.

The only places that don't take cards nowadays are charity grills and such. I keep 5 bucks in my pocket in case there's an emergency where I need a brat ASAP.

MY GF is that way, will only use her Debit card. I'm a "need to have cash in my wallet" type of guy, I hate using my debit card for a coffee or a single drink.

I usually try to have at least 10 bucks on me at all times. I've found though that I tend to impulse buy when I have cash. I always end up visiting Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts more often than usual when I have cash on me. smile

The actual cost of printing money is very high especially the Euro,
Due to the amount of security measures needed to combat forgery.
So its a reasonable assumption Governments and Banks will promote technology to reduce costs.
A company called G4S has developed software that lets you use your mobile phone like a debit card.
Personally I like the feeling of cash in my pocket but I can see the advantages. (So long as your phone is charged) LoL

I use cash for small purchases unless I'm out/low. I usually pay for meals when I'm out with cash. I only use a credit card when it's a big bill or, again, I'm low on cash.

I never use debit because it's linked to my checking account, and I don't want them getting to that, and also fraud protection on debit cards isn't as good or as fast as on a CC. If someone hacks my account I don't want them taking a couple thousand out of my checking and waiting weeks/months to get it back!
If someone hacks my CC, I call the company to get it taken off and simply don't pay that amount. At no time am I ever out the money.

I can explain this, and sorry if it was already addressed in this thread, didn't read the whole thing...

This young person heard your statement as "Keep the change", not "I don't need the COINS".

Younger people (mostly) don't call a typical pocket of coins "change".

I'm 34 and work as a tire technician. Unfortunately most the time I have to wear both hats. Be in the middle of installing tires on anything from a Honda Accord to an F-350 then run inside and answer a phone or run the counter.

I'm not the kind of person who can do even the simplest of math in my head and certainly on the spot. I wasn't there, maybe she was having an attitude problem, but don't be quick to judge. I've had people do similar things to me or at the last minute say, "hear let me just give you this and then that and so on" only to have them then be indifferent and have arrogant fun at my expense when they see they've confused me. Fine have your laugh. What may be simple for you may not be for others. Some people learn and or see things and process them differently. There's also plenty of people out there who are scamming by purposefully causing that kind of confusion but that's a different issue.

I rely on the register prompts because my job bombards me as it is with so much noise and stress and being spread too thin performing the labor that we do and often short handed and as I stated, I'm not a good math on the spot person. Perhaps some of you all need to be a little more gracious and instead of treating another person like they're an idiot, show some kindness.

Then why did she give me 2 of the 3 dollars she owed me? Plus this particular DD isn't allowed to accept tips.
