Looks like it could be interesting, They are running a free preview weekend, and if you play the game this weekend, you get to keep it for free. Nice twist on the free weekend, IMHO!
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck.” -Robert Heinlein

I played a couple of rounds. A little hard to know what's going on at first, but it's basically Conquest. Ships instead of the usual FPS. Combat was fun, each ship is a little different. I didn't figure out how to do the upgrades, which is pretty important. I'll go back and watch the video. I know that C is kind of an autopilot, T targets, ctrl and space are up/down (or arrows). Lots of eye candy. If I continue to enjoy I'll buy some dlc since the game is free. Would be fun as a group.
I've tried 3 different times over the last couple of days and keep getting a "Our servers are down" message. Guess I'm not meant to play this one...

Try a different ship. When I changed to the hunter(?) I got in games quickly. They had a message up about server issues due to not expecting such a big response too.
Myself and Fudge gave it a throw last night ... man the servers were filling up fast, even just getting into the same server was a bit of a trial ... but after we sorted out a method .. we had some really good games .. the longest round lasted about 50 min
Dont think of it as being vastly outnumbered ... but just having a large target selection.
The only thing more accurate than incoming fire, is incoming friendly fire

I couldn't get far enough into the game pick a ship!
I suspect they may have gotten a bigger response than they expected with the free weekend, maybe if I wait a couple of days I'll have another go at it.

I've progressed enough to get a sniper ship, but after upgrading the guns, I couldn't upgrade anything else even though I had the XP so I upgraded the flagship instead. Had loads of fun with the sniper ship though!
Later on, I had really bad issues with ping. Even on a London server, my ping was in the 200+ range.

Pick a ship on the left side of the screen, then launch and look for a server.

I click on "Play" from Steam, I get the splash screen with the name of the game, copyright info, etc, and I get an image of a ship with a "Connecting to Server" icon and message in the lower left of the screen. I don't get anything after that except an "Our servers are down" prompt.

That's odd for sure! Spent an hour or two playing this afternoon. I launch, get the splash screen with various loading messages for a minute or so, then the main game screen. I choose a ship on the left and launch the server browser. Some servers I choose are full or whatever the issue is, so I go to the next in my region. Game launches. Not sure what the problem is? Maybe there's something in the game forum? It's an alpha, so no telling.
Moving the mouse controls camera and targeting. Your ship's aim point rotates slower than you can turn the camera, so wait for the red dot to settle on your target before firing.
As for objectives, you start in your team's base, and your objective is to capture the base from the enemy team while trying not to lose your own. Aside from each team's main base, there are 4 "forward bases" which allow you to access the enemy base, or them to access yours, and 10 "mineral bases" which provide resources and unlock upgrades to your ship (you don't choose upgrades, they're automatically applied, improving your ship across the board when you next visit a friendly base). There's also a "Gas Facility" which is only periodically available for capture, and when claimed, gives the controlling team a temporary buff.

The developers were hoping to gain 15,000 extra players over the weekend.By Sat morning they had 190,000 so that may explain the problems you were having.
Wow! I hope that gives them whatever they were looking for. The game has promise, and I really like how the ship abilities interact. At first, I thought I couldn't take down any ship with my puny sniper ship's damage, but with the special ability, it really boosted my damage. If there was a flagship attacking the same target, then the boosted damage can be insane!
