Good to see some familiar posters still here!

Last time I was flying F18 was about 2007, back into it and loving it, I think I've worked out all the Nvidia/resolution setting that seem to work best for me, and I'm not getting any crashes or anything. Just been practicing and remembering all the avionics etc.. would love to try a some multiplayer coop training, I'm on Aus WST time, so not sure if anyone would be keen but I got some time off around Easter.

System:
AOC 27inch Gaming Monitor, 1920x1080, 1ms GtG, 144Hz, 80M:1 DCR
GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-Gaming
Intel Core i7 4790K
GIGABYTE GeForce GTX760 Overclocked (Base:1085MHz,Boost:1150MHz), 4096MB (6008MHz) GDDR5
Creative Sound Blaster Z
Kingston 16GB (2x8GB), PC3-15000 (1866MHz) DDR3, HyperX Fury Black
Samsung SH-224DB/BSBE SATA Black Internal 24x Speed Plus DVD+-RW Drive
Samsung 1TB SSD, 840 EVO Series
Thermaltake 850W ToughPower Gold Power Suppl
Corsair Vengeance K70 Mechanical Keyboard
Corsair Hydro Series H105 Liquid CPU Cooler
Razer Blackshark Gaming Headset
Corsair Vengeance M65 FPS Laser Gaming Mouse Arctic White
NaturalPoint TrackIR 5 Ultra Head Tracker Bundle
Saitek Pro Flight Combat Rudder Pedals
Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog
Toshiba 3TB DT01ACA, SATA III second drive
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium

Software running when flying F18:
Thrustmaster Target
FRAPS
TrackIR 5.2
VAC (Voice Activated Commands)
Saitek software for rudder pedals
Microsoft Security Essentials

Using TSHv3.06 One Click Updater

Settings while flying F18:
Desktop Resolution: 1600x900

TSH Manager settings:

Running F18.EXE as administrator and Win 98/ME compatibility.

Nvidia driver version 9.18.13.4788
Nvidia settings:

Here is what I found:
Higher resolutions (eg 1920x1080) make the graphics much nicer but it makes the HUD text tiny and unreadable unless I press my nose right up to the screen - so I chose 1600x900 which makes the HUD font size readable without binoculars and shows enough of the cockpit. Also doesn't stretch anything.

Higher levels of Antialiasing make the HUD and message fonts unreadable and blurred. So I chose FXAA overiding any game settings to give a "light" antialiasing - this gets rid of the ugly "jaggies" with no performance hit - looks nice enough and performs well and the HUD fonts and messages are still readable.

FRAMERATES: I don't seem to get any AA slowdown. Framerates are high (see above images) and stay high. Sometimes though when I start a mission it starts with a low framerate just sitting on the deck about to launch - usually in the 30s or high 20s. However if I ALT TAB to desktop and then return, or, alternatively if I restart the mission this gets rid of the lower framerates and they stay high during the whole mission. I think vsync has a lot to do with framerates...

I get no CTDs, F18 doesn't crash when I alt tab to desktop.

I get the sky banding - see above photos - can't get rid of it - does anyone know how?

Any advice on settings to try are welcome.

Regards,

AFAIK the Sky Banding is a DirectX artifact and can only be removed using the DirectX Tweaker utility to emulate the earlier DirectX version, but this brings some other issues along with it.

I can have similar result with my fa18 install, on windows 8.1 ; so it is possible
I have two questions
-How can you have KC135 as tanker?
-And I see your skins are way better thn mine; do you have a skinpack installed of some sort?

Hi Canadair,

The KC-135 is available for tanking from in many of the Iraq single missions and campaigns. Also available in the editor.

I'm using a few different skins - my F18 is the Horus' F/A-18E VF-111 HIRES. You can see my other mods/skins here:

Most are available here:
http://www.jf18-resource.com/

Anyone recommend any other mods/skins I should be using?

I assume there is currently no good fix for the banding? I've tried using DXTweaker before but too many negative effects to flying.

Does anyone know what happened to iam73 32 bit mod to get rid of the banding?

thanks for the offer.
however, I should clarify that I use facetracknoir with point tracker plugin with trackir interface.

I can look left and right with no problem, but up and down is very limited.
what trackir do you use?
