It is snowing here...the snowpack was growing thinner this week. Oh well, sooner or later it will be mud season Anyone catch the lunar eclipse? Just a partial here and I missed it.

Widowmaker and our Scots here should have had a full eclipse more or less. Here in Berlin, we had a 3/4 shadow over the sun. I guess you'll find some videos on YouTube.

Oh, come now! The vernal equinox isn't until 4:45 PM EDT (22:45 UTC). Anyway, Happy Vernal Equinox to all! It's snowing here as well. The US will experience a fantastic solar eclipse from Oregon to South Carolina just two years from now, keep up with things here. I'm hoping we can travel to see it (and that its not cloudy!) WELCOME SPRING! (except for our friends in the Southern Hemisphere...) (& thanks MudWasp)

Oh, man, clouds at the wrong time... that stinks!
I gotta tell this one... actionjoe, we had the same gold mylar glasses for an eclipse in the Pittsburgh area some 20 or more years ago. I had my kids all lined up looking at the sun with them on, and snapped a picture using a star filter - they were so ticked off, it looked really corny & goofy with the specular reflections off of those glasses. Fast forward to my daughter getting married a couple years ago, I slipped that beauty into the photo slide show of her life... she shouldn't have trusted me to put it together...

Hasse, I feel for you. I was at Oskarshamn, Sweden last summer about a for about week, just before the summer solstice. It was the furthest north I'd ever been (well, technically, Stockholm, but I only had an evening and morning there). I couldn't get over how long the daylight lasted, and I couldn't help thinking "Yes, and in the winter the night is just about as long..."
Does the Baltic moderate your temperatures, or is it pretty much like the "Meanwhile in Finland" picture you posted on the other thread? And what do you do in that much dark? We have a lot of land to take care of, and I tell my wife, "I can take the cold - I just can't take the dark!" Makes a body want to go into hibernation.
I'm glad to hear you had a nice view of the eclipse. Did you get any pictures?

The Gulf Stream is what makes it possible to live here in the north. Without it, there would be nothing but freezing tundra here even in the summer. But even with the Gulf Stream bringing in warmth, winters in Finland are still long and cold - and dark! In the old times, I suppose people spent of a lot of the darkest time of the year by drinking and making babies. They are still popular hobbies, but modern society also provides people with other options for killing time. Physical exercise is very important and makes the dark months more tolerable. I like to go skiing regularly, though this winter has been somewhat challenging for that hobby, thanks to wildly varying weather. With my medal collection and of course flight sims, I've never really felt bored in winter. I also like to dabble in amateur astronomy, but I've noticed that as I get older I'm less inclined to go sit out in the cold with a telescope, so these days I mostly use binoculars, which are much easier to carry around and set up for observation. I'm glad to hear you had a nice view of the eclipse. Did you get any pictures? No pics unfortunately. I was at work and was able to observe the eclipse only for about 15 minutes before I had to go back.
